WATCH: Humming House, 'I Am a Bird'

Artist: Humming House
Hometown: Nashville, TN
Song: "I Am a Bird"
Album: Revelries

In Their Words: “'I Am a Bird' came very easily in the writing process and was finished in about two hours. The narrative of 'Bird' rings true for us as creatives … a fledgling taking the risk of flight for the first time is terrifying just as it is to pursue art for a living. But without believing in possibilities and taking a risk, there can be no reward. 'I Am a Bird' became a Humming House song when Leslie joined the band. We sent her a demo of the tune and she loved it. From there, the band arranged and re-arranged the song up until we landed in Sputnik Studio in 2014. Mitch Dane’s production really aided in bringing the lighthearted feel of the song to fruition. I love how it turned out and in particular Josh Wolak’s whimsical mandolin melodies throughout the tune." — Justin Wade Tam

"We stopped at the Grand Canyon on our way home from a run of shows out west supporting Kacey Musgraves. Days off in beautiful locations are few and far between for us, but we lucked out with a chance to visit the Grand Canyon for an entire afternoon and evening. It was a first-time visit for everyone but Justin and our friend Arnaud Reguigne from Orleans, France, who was traveling with us. Arnaud was getting footage of us throughout the entire trip for a documentary he is making about indie bands and touring life and, at the last minute just as the sun was starting to dip, he suggested we get a live video performing on the edge of the canyon. We had walked for a bit along the rim so that our van was about half a mile the other direction and the sun was starting to get low, so we sprinted back to the van to get our instruments before it was too dark to get any decent footage. We hauled our instruments back out to a clearing along the rim and set up — with about 20 people in front of us trying to enjoy the sunset in peace. Hopefully we didn't disturb their reverie too much! We just couldn't resist the chance to play some music in one of the most beautiful settings on the planet.” — Leslie Rodriguez
