In the 1960s New York folk revival, he was a guitar player and multi-instrumental sideman who specialized in the blues. Then as an artist on Columbia Records, he made dazzling varied roots albums while supporting stars like Bob Dylan and Jerry Jeff Walker. He took nearly 20 years off the road to become the nation’s pre-eminent expert on American violins, and now at 74 he divides his time between his Wilmington, DE violin shop and recording and touring.
