Adam Weiner has made records for twenty-five years, the last fifteen as the singer and pianist of Low Cut Connie, a band NPR has called “the best live rock ’n’ roll band in America.” Barack Obama put them on his summer playlist; Elton John and Bruce Springsteen are fans. Yet when we asked how he stays steady, he pointed to something smaller: the feeling people carry home from a show. We talk about piano in gay bars and ballet classes, why he’s grown less cynical the longer he’s stayed in the business, and the open mic he’d happily play if it all fell apart.
