This Wednesday brings an exciting double bill to Hermosa Beach’s Saint Rocke as Hot Buttered Rum and Greensky Bluegrass take the stage. Our intrepid reporter Brian Hepp chatted with the HBR guys prior to their upcoming appearance…
“There’s not a forcein this world any place, any time like the human soul on fire.”
It’s a story fit for the finest bluegrass historybooks. What could be better than agroup of musicians hiking through the mountains and deciding to form a bandtogether? Picture it: A few string-pickers venture into theSierras and out comes Hot Buttered Rum String Band.
Much has happened since that hiking trip. Hot Buttered Rum (HBR) has ditched the“string band” part of the name and gone through a few personnel changes, butthe bluegrass influence is alive and well. HBR is partnering up with Greensky Bluegrass on thiscurrent tour of the west coast. These two bands are at the top of the modern bluegrass scene. Constant touring, dedicated fans andunpredictable live shows are what these groups are all about. No set is the same, and the songs varyfrom traditional classics to the wildest pop songs. But every tune still stays true to the bluegrassspirit: Highly skilled musiciansjamming with string instruments in front of a dancing audience.
HBR describes their distinct sound as “high altitudeCalifornia bluegrass”. The SanFrancisco based quintet began with a traditional bluegrass sound on their firststudio album, In These Parts, butthey have added a dose of rock n roll on their latest, Limbs Akimbo. Butdon’t fret, traditionalists. Thisis still one mighty bluegrass band. We still have the wild fiddle solos from Aaron Redner and a frenzy ofwoodwinds from multi-instrumentalist, Erik Yates. Limbs Akimbo’stitle track sounds like a mix of Paul Simon circa Rhythm of the Saints and The String Cheese Incident circa Outside Inside. Furthermore, the subtle sex jam“Beneath the Blossoms” and crowd favorite “Summertime Gal” make this album amust hear.
Hot Buttered Rum and Greensky Bluegrass will be performingat Saint Rocke in Hermosa Beach on Wednesday, November 9th. Keep your eyes open for the impressiveHBR tour bus in the parking lot… it runs on recycled vegetable oil! Be sure to stop by, say hello and dance the night away with the BluegrassLA party.
