In Their Words: “This is the first song I wrote after I learned I was going to be a mother. I was in the middle of the blurry dream world that comes along with that and also making major life decisions about where our family was going to live, how we wanted our futures to look. Fast-forward two years, and my friend and director, Tim Gehling, came to visit our new home in Los Angeles. He and my husband, Mikael Kennedy, shot a bunch of super8 film around California. We wanted it to feel non-linear and dream-like, so we found some old animation and vintage material that Tim wove that into his original footage. The grainy, overlapping images really echo this luminous haze I was in when I wrote the song.” — Melaena Cadiz

Song: “Release Me”
Album: Dearest Everybody
Release Date: January 19, 2018
Label: Release Me Records

In Their Words: “I wrote this song as a gift to my mother on her 70th birthday. I’d assumed that the song was too personal to put on my record. It’s a sort of love song to my father from my mother. But when I played it for my producer, Mike Andrews, he said we definitely had to record it. I’m very happy we did. I’m not sure I’ve ever shared such a personal song with the world. There’s something very liberating about it.” — Inara George
