Marcus King is here to show us that age really is just a number. Over the summer, the 25-year-old singer-songwriter and guitar slinger released a video filmed in the home of countless valuable instruments, Carter Vintage Guitars in Nashville, Tennessee. Performing as a three-piece, King and Co. cover a Grand Funk Railroad tune from 1970 called “Sin’s a Good Man’s Brother.” To further highlight the age contrast, the guitar and bass come from 1960 and 1954, respectively. It seems as though the youth of the group would be an odd match for the music, but the trio taps into the music in a way that is wholly authentic and genuine. It’s almost hard to believe, but the Marcus King Trio sounds like a vintage rock group here, complete with a soaring guitar solo that is built on a dynamic and expressive groove from the bass and drums. It’s incredible to see a band reach into the past and bring back some magic from rock ‘n’ roll’s adolescence. Shades of Hendrix, Rush, and Cream are apparent in this live performance from the Marcus King Trio.
