In Their Words: “Unlike other songs on The Greatest Fire, ‘Halfway Sane’ doesn’t work as a narrative or even a meditation on a single experience. It’s more of a stream of interrelated thoughts and images circling around desire — desire for love, for sexual fulfillment, for a sense of grounding in the world, for direction and purpose. Funny how a desire for one thing bleeds into and stokes the desire for the other. We lose our way and yearn to grab onto some other person or being that we think will save us, or we lose love and we are suddenly grappling with our life’s path, our sense of purpose. It’s ultimately a song of restlessness, because those desires can never really be fulfilled, and it’s set against the backdrop of winter changing to spring — the restlessness of the seasons, a reminder that everything moves on and changes.” — Jeremy Bass
