In Their Words: “We’ve been in Nashville about 10 years now, but all came up in Alabama — the outskirts of Birmingham mainly. When we moved we all made the jump together. We were staying in a band house to cut cost of rent & be able to tour more, so naturally we moved into a house all together in Nashville. Our dear friend, Joshua Shoemaker, who grew up with us in those Birmingham outskirts, also lived in those houses & made that jump with us as well. He pushed us to make the move as he was expanding his career as a filmmaker. We had our friends’ bands come stay with us at our house. Banditos would play shows with them. Joshua would film videos. It was simpatico.

Long story long we adore this man & he does incredible work. He’s done several live videos with us over the years, but never a narrative. It’s always been a dream to make it happen & I think the excitement shines through. We had an amazing team, hired some really star actors from Facebook & it turned out beautifully. The song itself kind of throws back to our Birmingham days where we’d be at a bar & you’d see the lonely & ornery drink themselves dry at the end of the table. This one is about finding hope in those dark places & letting yourself love yourself despite life’s circumstances.” — Mary Beth Richardson, Banditos

WATCH: Banditos, ‘Old Ways’

Artist: Banditos
Hometown: Nashville, TN by way of Birmingham, AL
Song: “Old Ways"
Album: Banditos
Label: Bloodshot Records

In Their Words: “Being on the road, we collide with so many worlds every day. We can affect individuals by just a kind look or a song that reaches a place they’ve been meaning to scratch. It’s a truly humbling experience to have folks open up to you after being touched by a feeling you’ve brought out of them. We love these wonderful highs we can all connect within song.

This one, in particular, is about sticking with someone you care for through the lows. It’s seeing them through tough times that are messy and uncomfortable, and making sure they know they’re loved. Mainly, it targets the hopelessness that leads to suicide and, in some respect, says it’s okay to feel that way. It’s a swan song for all those we’ve already lost and a plea for those who we still have.” — Mary Richardson

WATCH: Banditos, ‘Waitin”

From Birmingham — by way of Nashville — Banditos are a blues-rocking gaggle of 20-somethings who tear it all the way up on their recently released self-titled debut. Think Drive-By Truckers mixed with CCR and a bit of Janis Joplin, and you'll be close to the mark of what singer/guitarist Corey Parsons, singer/banjo player Stephen Pierce, drummer Randy Wade, guitarist Jeffrey Salter, vocalist Mary Beth Richardson, and bassist Danny Vines are up to.

At this year's Lagunitas-sponsored Bloodshot Records SXSW party, Banditos ducked into the Yard Dog Art gallery, unplugged, and tore it up in a different way. Richardson says, “The weather decided to be a non-conformist and poured during our set outside, but luckily the crowd happily obliged, ducked under the tent with us, and danced through it. It was a great show. We set up shortly on the couch in the art gallery with a slightly wet dog look, but I think it worked for us. We don't normally play acoustically, but 'Waitin'' seemed like a good song to start. It was a fun filming because the folks on the street behind stopped to watch through the windows and the filming team were really great to work with.”
