Gig Bag: Special Consensus

Welcome to Gig Bag, a BGS feature that peeks into the touring essentials of some of our favorite artists. This time around, Greg Cahill from Special Consensus details the items he always have nearby when out on the road.

Lightweight long-sleeve shirts: I am always most comfortable traveling when wearing a comfortable shirt, preferably with pockets. I, of course, do wear t-shirts in a warm climate, but the long-sleeve lightweight shirts have pockets for reading glasses and my phone, and often keep me cooler than a t-shirt. Long sleeves rolled up a bit keeps sun off my arms — I have had brushes with skin cancer from all the sun I absorbed at outdoor festivals over the years, so I must be careful about the sun. In colder climates, I do were a nice flannel shirt or sweater.

Cowboy boots and jeans: I have worn cowboy boots all the time for probably at least 40 years. They seem to mold to one’s feet when broken in and are most comfortable. Lucchese, Tony Lama, and Justin boots are my favorites. I wear boots on stage, so I always wear a pair and keep a stage pair handy. Jeans are also an essential element of my comfort zone and “look.”

Handy all-purpose tool: I always keep this thing handy. It has a bottle opener, corkscrew and cork remover, and a small knife blade. I keep the Boy Scout (and US Army) motto in mind at all times: “Be prepared.”

Sunscreen: This is essential, especially when we play outdoor festivals. I have had too many sun damage things removed from my skin over the years. We never thought about putting on lotion “back in the day …”

Shoe polish: I know this seems weird, but we often play an outdoor festival — getting my boots caked with dust or mud or rain water — and then play a theater the next day. Much easier to just wipe the boots clean and quick polish than to keep rubbing them on my pants or paper towels to make them look presentable.

Extra strings and picks: There is always that one time when the extra strings I thought I had in the banjo case were not there, or when the pick dropped in the dirt by the stage at night can’t be found quickly. Always good to have extras of everything in the bag.

Black t-shirt and ball cap: I often wear a black or white t-shirt under my stage shirt to better absorb sweat, rather than blowing out the armpits! Also keep a ball cap for sun and rain protection.

Gig Bag: Yarn

Welcome to Gig Bag, a BGS feature that peeks into the touring essentials of some of our favorite artists. This time around, Yarn's Blake Christiana gives us a look at what he has to have handy when he's out on the road. Check out Yarn's tour dates here.

New song ideas: Gotta have some with me. Sometimes the road is your only rehearsal.

Gibson B25: My dad bought it new in the '60s. It's the only guitar I use. Eventually, I'll get another B25 as back up, but for now this is it.

A great pair jeans: The kind you wear every day and don't take off until they're a shredded mess. And that's what I do. I think these have another four months left of everyday wear. We'll see. I'm a bit of a minimalist, I guess.

A good pair of stage boots: They have to be comfortable enough to wear all day, in case you have to. These have been good to me.

Socks: I can never have enough socks. It's a strange phenomenon: No matter how many pairs I bring, I'm always running out. I prefer Farm to Feet. They're good people.

Personal Nicknames:
Sav: SavvyKat

What was the first record you ever bought with your own money?
Sav: Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace by the Foo Fighters and Illinois by Sufjan Stevens. I bought them together.
Katie: The soundtrack to the film Juno. I listened to it obsessively in middle school.
Michael: Seventh grade — Rocks by Aerosmith and Fly By Night by Rush

How many unread emails or texts currently fill your inbox?
Sav: I'm really OCD, so … none.
Katie: None!
Michael: Zero, OCD like Sav.

If your life were a movie, which songs would be on the soundtrack?
Sav: 1. "Rhapsody in Blue" by George Gershwin … the Fantasia animation pretty much sums up my life. 2. "Mr. Blue Sky" by ELO. Who can resist such a happy song? 3. "Bicycle" by Queen: "I want to ride my bicycle. I want to ride my bike. I want to ride my bicycle. I want to ride it where I like." Sums it up.
Katie: Everything on the Juno soundtrack. (I am obsessed.)
Michael: Anything by Sufjan Stevens and the National, with a pinch of Animal Collective.

What brand of jeans do you wear?
Sav: Brands. Ugh. Whatever fits and doesn't have holes in it.
Katie: Flying Monkey (dig the name).
Michael: Arizona

What's your go-to karaoke tune?
Sav: When I was six years old, I performed "Paved Paradise" for my school talent show to a karaoke track. That's all I got.
Katie: Any song from any Disney movie ever.
Michael: "Don’t Stop Me Now" by Queen or "Just Like Heaven" by the Cure

If you were a liquor, what would you be?
Sav: I’m not a drinker, so I have absolutely no idea. I would guess the strong bitter kind that you have to have an acquired taste for. 😉
Katie: I don't drink, so to confidently answer, I took a quiz on quizrocket.com. RESULT: Rum — "You are sweet and friendly and sociable, but you have a laid back vibe. You are best enjoyed in a relaxed state of mind."
Michael: Fireball Whiskey = red hair.

Poehler or Schumer?
Sav: Amy Poehler slays it in Parks and Recreation.  I'm pretty sure she's my spirit animal.
Katie: Tina Fey is my favorite, so naturally, Amy Poehler.
Michael: Poehler all the way.

Chocolate or vanilla?
Sav: I was actually born without a sense of smell or taste, so it's all the same to me.
Katie: Chocolate
Michael: Vanilla, for sure. Chocolate is everywhere, and a good vanilla flavor is hard to come by these days.

Blues or bluegrass?
Sav: Blues-grass.
Katie: Greensky Bluegrass
Michael: Billy Strings — Punch Brothers — Bluegrass
