3×3: Shannon LaBrie on Dresses, Cachaca, and Her Affinity for Alabama Songwriters

Artist: Shannon LaBrie
Hometown: Lincoln, NE
Latest Album: War & Peace
Personal Nicknames: Shay, LaBrie, ShalaBrie

What was the first record you ever bought with your own money?:
Matrix soundtrack. It was "Parental Advisory," so I had to have an older friend buy it for me. I was obsessed with the song "Clubbed to Death" by Rob Dougan. Now that I think about it, I think I was in fifth or sixth grade. Yeah, I was an intense kid.

How many unread emails or texts currently fill your inbox?:
Ha! Tonight, 197 unread e-mails and 48 unread texts. I know, I know, I'm behind.

If your life were a movie, which songs would be on the soundtrack?:
"Cover Me Up" by Jason Isbell and "Over My Head" by Alabama Shakes.
The lyrics, the tempo … they just fit every situation of my life. Those songs are perfect anytime of day.

What brand of jeans do you wear?:
I wear dresses — preferably dresses by Johnny Was, Biya, and Free People. But, let's be honest: I shop at Goodwill.

What's your go-to karaoke tune?:
If I did karaoke, it'd be BeyoncĂ© "Rocket!"

If you were a liquor, what would you be?
Weekdays: A glass of red wine or some Jameson neat!
Weekends: Cachaca. Nothing like a spicy caparhinia!

3×3: Cassandra Violet on Nose Flutes, Unscented Scents, and the Neutralizing Effects of Horchata

Artist: Cassandra Violet
Hometown: Los Angeles, CA
Latest Album: Body & Mind EP
Personal Nicknames: Cassie and the Good Fight, Cassaroo (only my dad calls me this)

If Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, and Mohammed were in a band together, who would play what?
I would love to hear these four gentlemen play four-part harmony created by nose flutes. That would be a cool band.

If you were a candle, what scent would you be?
My scent would be lavender shampoo, coconut oil, and Trader Joe's unscented detergent (interpreting this question really literally). Should I say pine needles and musk or something?

What literary character or story do you most relate to?
I have related to Bridget Jones on a really deep level since I was 14 years old. I re-read that book whenever I'm feeling bummed out.

What's your favorite planet — and why?
Mars, because it's fiery but can still sustain life (barely).

What's your best physical attribute?
My hair. Also my mouth.

Who is your favorite Jennifer: Lawrence, Aniston, or Love-Hewitt?
Aniston has my same birthday, February 11, so I feel a certain kinship with her. I also like how she's found her own way in love. However, enough with the Aveeno ads, already. I grew up watching Party of Five so I also love JLH. And everybody loves Jennifer Lawrence.

Cat or dog?
Dog. Dachshund.

Rain or shine?
Rain. Cold weather fashion is the most flattering on everybody — men, especially.

Mild, medium, or spicy?
Spicy, if there is some horchata around to neutralize.

3×3: Terri Binion on Boots, Band, and Big Bowls of Sticky White Rice

Artist: Terri Binion
Hometown: Jacksonville, NC
Latest Album: The Day After The Night Before
Personal Nicknames:  No nicknames, but I'm sure there are some descriptions that personify me: swath-like, pushy, perfectionist, hard-headed … things like that, but most times I manage to pass as endearing. Wink.

Which decade do you think of as the "golden age" of music?
Well, luckily I was born at a perfect time that I could have some sense of the last several decades, but am particularly fond of the '70s, but starting in 1969. The country songwriters, the folk writers, and the rock 'n' roll bands from the '70s are my influences — Glen Campbell, Joni Mitchell, the Allman Brothers, Neil Young. You may not hear that in my music, but when I hear a Steely Dan tune or an old Willie Nelson song suddenly play, I'm transported. I truly feel like I have experienced, first-hand, the greatest era of music ever recorded and released in album format. It's the feeling I get in my bones that makes me biased to this era.

If you could have a superpower, what would you choose?
I would FLY.

If you were in a high school marching band, which instrument would you want to play?
You know, I played the clarinet. I wore the uniform and I marched. I had that little attachable music stand with the marching cues penciled in above the charts. It was not a fun instrument to play on the field. If I were a kid today, I think I'd like to bang on a snare drum!

What's your go-to road food?
I haven't toured in a while, but I do do some driving. When I'm not eating the healthy stuff out of the cooler in the back, it's usually bad drive-thru or snacks like salt & vinegar chips or peanut butter-filled pretzels. I love a roadside stand, too — hot boiled peanuts, jerky, and peaches and oranges. I am not hard to please.

Who was the best teacher you ever had — and why?
I had a couple teachers early in my life, out West in California, who taught me or influenced me. In 1969, Mr. Jimby was my fourth grade homeroom teacher. He was handsome and tall, and he played old folk songs for us with his cowboy boots swung up on his desk, resting back in his chair, singing and playing guitar. Blew my little nine-year-old mind! Years later, in the same town, my high school band teacher was really intense and I loved his intensity while he rehearsed us for concert performance. His hair would shake back and forth across his head, his jacket would crawl up around his shoulders and neck. He'd stop us and yell at us and, when he was done ranting, we had learned something, a light would come on and suddenly we were better students. I was in awe of him.

What's your favorite fruit?
Probably the one I'm eating at the time. I keep apples and bananas year-round, but when I splurge for cherries, I eat them until I've had too many, and in the early Winter, I crave the red grapefruit, and in the Summer, it's mango and watermelon standing over the sink.

Boots or sneakers?
Boots, boots, boots.

Noodles or rice?
The starches curse me, so please don't tempt me with a bowl of hot, sticky white rice.

Pacific or Atlantic?
Pacific!

3×3: William Wild on Blues, Bluegrass, and Blink 182

Artist: William Wild
Hometown: Knoxville, TN
Latest Album: Steady Now
Rejected Band Names: Newport Plain Talk. It’s the name of a paper in a neighboring city where my parents are from. The paper told me I couldn’t use the name, but now that I think about it … I should have used it.

What was the first record you ever bought with your own money?
Blink 182, Enema of the State

How many unread emails or texts currently fill your inbox?
A cumulative four messages — I’m on top of things these days!

If your life were a movie, which songs would be on the soundtrack?
"Dreams"  — Fleetwood Mac
"Pink Moon" — Nick Drake
"Nevermind" – Nirvana
"City Lights" — Thomas Dybdhal
"Care of Cell 44" — The Zombies
"Pardon Me" – Incubus
"Dogs" – Damien Rice
"Be Here Now" — Ray Lamontagne
Heartbreaker – Ryan Adams (entire record)
This is silly … I could go all day.

What brand of jeans do you wear?
Raw … as can be.

What's your goto karaoke tune?
"Livin’ on a Prayer" or "Enter Sandman"

If you were a liquor, what would you be?
I really like to drink whiskey.

Poehler or Schumer?
Schumer, although sometimes I feel awkward.

Chocolate or vanilla?
Vanilla

Blues or bluegrass?
For some reason I want to say blues … but bluegrass!

3×3: Hot Buttered Rum on Doc Ellis, BĂ©la Fleck, and the Perils of Hydration

Artist: Nat Keefe (of Hot Buttered Rum)
Hometown: Redwood City, CA  (currently lives in San Francisco)
Latest Album: The Kite & the Key
Rejected Band Names: Shuttlecock, Christmas Is Ruined, Webalo … I think we’ll stick with Hot Buttered Rum.

If you had to live the life of a character in a song, which song would you choose?
If I could be a character for one day, I’d like to be Doc Ellis in Todd Snider’s “America’s Favorite Pastime.” That guy pitched a no-hitter for the Pittsburg Pirates high on acid! What’s a stranger thrill than that?!

Where would you most like to live or visit that you haven't yet?
I was driven by travel-lust for years. Now that I’ve been to five continents and all the states, all I want is to explore my home. That is, when I’m not enjoying the highways and motels of this great country with Hot Buttered Rum.

What was the last thing that made you really mad?

What's the best concert you've ever attended?
The month I graduated high school, I saw BĂ©la Fleck at the Fillmore. Something came together for me there, and I saw a life of music unfold in front of me. Seven years later, I was onstage with BĂ©la in Bean Blossom, Indiana, for Peter Rowan’s all-star jam! I love that guy’s spirit of adventure and dedication to excellence. He makes me think, “What’s the next uncomfortable, scary situation I’m going to put myself into?"

What was your favorite grade in school?
A split between kindergarten, because I love finger-painting, and senior year, because that’s when my game with the ladies started coming together.

What are you reading right now?
I just finished Ralph Stanley’s autobiography in preparation for this project. Highly recommended! He somehow got his voice onto the page, and I don’t think he blogs every week for practice. I’m also on a serious Philip Roth kick. I think part of me wishes I was Jewish and from Newark.

Whiskey, water, or wine?
A little of each, please. I have aspirations to be well-hydrated, but I also have a small bladder. So I balance my water intake with our travel itinerary. I get made fun of for always having to pee. My skills with a culca have improved. What’s a culca, you ask? Well …

North or South?
Wherever I’ve travelled in the world, there’s always a rivalry between the North and South, the East and West, the highlands and lowlands. People, myself included, thrive on rivalry and calling someone the “other.” I channel this urge into professional baseball. Go Giants! Beat L.A.!

Pizza or tacos?
I live in the Mission in San Francisco. It’s all about the burrito.

If Jesus, Buddha, Krishna, and Mohammed were in a band together, who would play what?
Hard to say, but I'd like to think their harmony would be unmatched … musically and otherwise.

What literary character or story do you most relate to?
One part Tom Joad, one part Sal Paradise, one part Leeland Stamper … the great American cocktail.

If you were a candle, what scent would you be?
My buddy Brendan's company, Harney + Co., makes these great scented Mandles, among other things. My favorite is "Tobacco + Cedar." Who wouldn't want to smell like that?

What's your best physical attribute?
My height. Always a great view at concerts, with apologies to the folks behind me.

Who is your favorite Jennifer: Lawrence, Aniston, or Love-Hewitt?
Lewis, singing me "Acid Tongue" lullabies.

If you had to live the life of a character in a song, which song would you choose?
As of today, the dogged, determined character singing “ The Road I’m On” ( Mando Saenz) who takes the beating of life and uses it like a chip on his shoulder: “ I’m not sure where it’s taking me now. I’m tired of being told it’s nowhere bound. Nothin’ quite as sweet as the sound of that same old song.”

If you had to live the life of a character in a song, which song would you choose?
The dad in "A Boy Named Sue." I'm kind of living out the narrative of that amazing tune in that I just named my daughter "Casper," so I'm expecting a good beating from her when I get older.

Where would you most like to live or visit that you haven't yet?
So many of my friends seem to rave about Berlin. Unfortunately, I've yet to go. A lot of my heroes live — or have lived — there, at some point or other. Anywhere in which David Hasselhoff's music is that popular must be a strange and truly unique place.

What was the last thing that made you really mad?
Easy: I'm particularly pissed off at cancer. It's taking away so many people I dearly love and admire, all too soon. A massive and hideous boo to cancer.

A photo posted by Henry Wagons (@henrywagons) on

What's the best concert you've ever attended?
I only recently saw the Rolling Stones in Melbourne at a 10,000-seat area — an intimate show for such an iconic bunch of legends. Keith Richards, in particular, fried my mind. Such a delicate touch creating such a mammoth sledge hammer of a sound. Hearing those songs live sent relentless shivers through all limbs … Surely, some of the coolest, hardened, elderly gentlemen that there are.

What was your favorite grade in school?
The final year … where shit was getting heavy. The concepts were finally real. The books I was reading had proper weight. The maths I was crunching was much needed exercise for my mind. The exams were a massive, sweaty stress that I felt had true real life consequences. Who was I to know they would end up pretty meaningless in the scheme of things? I cared about how well I did, at the time, so it was all an epic thrill ride. Yes, I was a nerd. Who knew I'd throw away my education, in a fit of noise and booze, and become a dirtbag musician huh? And … loving every damn minute.

What are you reading right now?
Are You Hungry Tonight?, an old cookbook of Elvis Presley's favourite recipes. I'm looking for a particular peanut butter pie recipe. It's either in that book or Graceland's Table.

A photo posted by Henry Wagons (@henrywagons) on

Whiskey, water, or wine?
Surely most of us songwriters would say all of the above?
If I have to choose, a single malt scotch whiskey with water on the side, please.

North or South?
Wherever the kind lady on Google Maps is telling me to go.

Pizza or tacos?
In general, I feel Australia is yet to nail Mexican food. We are a loooong way from the border, I guess. So, when at home in Australia, I'd go a pizza. But in the U.S., I loosen my belt and pull over at every damn taco truck I pass on the street.

My high school principal, Mr. Matthis, taught a European history class that I took my senior year. I'd say he's probably the best teacher I've had. He is so passionate about history. His class didn't even feel like school work.

What's your favorite fruit?
