In Their Words: “This is a love song — I wrote the lyrics for Flynn [Cohen] and he wrote the music to it. It’s as close as we’ll ever get to being a sappy folk couple. It was great when we pulled Natalie [Padilla] in on the fiddle and harmony vocals — it gave the song the energy we were looking for. The ‘we’re still here’ line can also be interpreted as a post-pandemic declaration as musicians, as in: ‘We haven’t gone anywhere and somehow we’re still doing this, for better or for worse!’ And it’s true — as hard as it has been through the pandemic to do what we do, we are back with the longest album of music we’ve ever released, and we feel like it is our most personal work yet.” — Liz Simmons, Low Lily

In Their Words: “Growing up with musician parents, I was exposed to many different musical styles — Motown being an important one. I loved Diana Ross and the Supremes, and we had the album A’ Go-Go on vinyl and I remember dancing to it as a child in our living room. I started to work up a bluegrass-inspired cover of ‘This Old Heart of Mine’ a couple years ago — I thought the song would work well with a string band treatment, which is provided courtesy of Wes Corbett on banjo, Flynn Cohen on mandolin and guitar, and Corey DiMario on double bass. I arranged the ’60s-style backing vocals as a loving nod to the era as well, provided by ska singer Dunia Best and jazz singer Nicole Zuraitis. Composed by Motown’s songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland alongside Sylvia Moy, it is a great example of classic Motown, and I cover it with the greatest respect.” — Liz Simmons

In Their Words: “I have known Sandy Denny’s ‘Who Knows Where the Time Goes’ (written circa 1967) since I was a teen and I’ve always loved it. It has that elusive poetic appeal in that it manages to say so much with very few words. There’s not much needed to preface it, as it speaks for itself so well in Sandy’s beautiful lyrics. I was raised steeped in the music of the folk revival, roots, and ’60s and ’70s rock ‘n’ roll, so it feels very fitting to have Pete Grant (Grateful Dead, the Incredible String Band) lend his beautiful pedal steel playing to my arrangement of this fittingly timeless song.” — Liz Simmons
