What song do you wish you had written?

Leah: “When Doves Cry” by Prince.

Chloe: “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen (Doesn’t everyone wish they wrote that damn song?!)

Who would be in your dream songwriter round?

Leah: Gillian Welch, Outkast, Bob Dylan, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Ani Difranco, Robert Johnson, the Buena Vista Social Club, Lila Downs, Bonnie Rait, Prince.

Chloe: Ani Difranco, Hosier. Nahko. Mos Def. Erykah Badu. Bob Marley. Joni Mitchell.

If you could only listen to one artist’s discography for the rest of your life, whose would you choose?

Leah: Bruce Molsky. Makes me feel home.

Chloe: Ohhhhhhh. That’s a hard one! Probably Bob Marley.

As one of our elders put it last night, We want to put the U.S in a chair in the middle of the room Surrounded by healers, activists, grandmothers, lovers, and children And tell it how good it could be. How it could rise to the occasion of its full potential in the face of white supremacy, the dismantling of Standing Rock, of distasteful leaders and embarrassing media, of capitalism over culture. All these hard working people from all corners of the globe. This land and all its beauty. We have so much more work to do And I know folks are tired. What else is there to do but show up again and again and again and again ? In solidarity with the people of Charlottesville and all others whom work to uplift the story of the south (and this country) May love triumph. . . . #notmysouth #blacklivesmatter #notoursouth #standup #speakout #showup #solidarity #alternateroots

How often do you do laundry?

Leah: What a weird question. Um , whenever the duty is called for. Depends on the show night.

Chloe: All the time. Randomly on the road and we string it all up to dry in the back of the bus, which gets pretty intimate and funny.

What was the last movie that you really loved?

Leah: I almost NEVER watch movies. But I watched an amazing South American film on the plane the other day called Vengo Olviendo that was a beautifully filmed, slow and delicate story about the complexity of human migration. It was excellent.

Chloe: I loved the movie LION that just came out about the boy who got lost in India and found his way back home via Google Maps. Crazy wild true story. Reminded me that technology can be a good thing (I can get a little anti).

If you could re-live one year of your life, which would it be and why?

Leah: Hmmm, I would probably go back to my early 20s, when I was traveling out of a backpack across Latin America learning to play banjo and studying folk music from all over the place. It was such a free and inspired time in my life. Not nearly as weighted as this whole “professional musician” thing.

Chloe: Year 7. Lucky number, lucky age, the mind is so open and spongey at that time. I’d go hang with my grandparents some more and pick their brains … especially my father’s mother who was a poet.

What’s your go-to comfort food?

Chloe: Thai food all day every day.

Kombucha — love it or hate it?

Leah and Chloe: LOVE ! Although once we got sponsored by a kombucha company and things got a little too fermenty in the van. It has to be handled in the right dosages.

Mustard or mayo?

Dijon

How often do you do laundry?

Every two weeks maybe? I’d love to do it more often, but I’m never home!

What was the last movie that you really loved?

Dunkirk

If you could re-live one year of your life, which would it be and why?

Probably go back to third grade and not give up my piano lessons! 25 and 27 were two pretty awesome/crazy years that I loved. My music career really took some positive turns around then, but I still wouldn’t go back. I’m just so excited for what’s coming up next!

What’s your go-to comfort food?

Vegan mac ’n cheese

Kombucha — love it or hate it?

Absolutely love kombucha … It’s my coffee!

Mustard or mayo?

Love mustard. There are so many varieties!

What song do you wish you had written?

“Temptation of Adam” by Josh Ritter

Who would be in your dream songwriter round?

Joanna Newsom, Anaïs Mitchell, Shara Nova, and Joni Mitchell. Holy smokes.

If you could only listen to one artist’s discography for the rest of your life, whose would you choose?

This is the toughest question! I’d probably go with the Beatles since their catalogue is so diverse. I’m never not in the mood for the Beatles.

How often do you do laundry?

As often as I can/need (two or three times a month?).

What was the last movie that you really loved?

I just watched the original Blade Runner and then had to watch the director’s cut immediately after. Annie Hall was reigning supreme before that.

If you could re-live one year of your life, which would it be and why?

Maybe summer 2009-2010. That was the summer I graduated high school and discovered Largo at the Cornet. I started going to the Watkins Family Hour every month, saw a bunch of my musical heroes in the flesh, and went to my first-ever festival. Guess you could say that was the year I caught the roots music bug!

Possibly unpopular opinion: I think they’re better together.

3×3: Lindsay White on Undies, Hippies, and Cookies

Artist: Lindsay White
Hometown: Corcoran, CA
Latest Album: Lights Out
Personal Nicknames: Annie, but only my family calls me that. I keep pressuring my wife to come up with something more creative than “babe,” but no luck yet.

What song do you wish you had written?

Monetarily speaking, probably something like “White Christmas.” But for the song’s sake, “I Know” by Fiona Apple. I have to mop my guts up off the floor every time I hear that song.

Who would be in your dream songwriter round?

No fair, this is too hard! Okay: Bob Dylan, Fiona Apple, and the spirit of Amy Winehouse. Also maybe Jay-Z or Haim to provide a little levity during intermission.

If you could only listen to one artist’s discography for the rest of your life, whose would you choose?

Dylan’s music speaks to me differently as I get older, plus he has a bajillion albums. It’d probably be five years before I started missing other artists’ music.

Aww @audriemag our gloves are in love. @title_sandiego @societynine

How often do you do laundry?

I wait til the last possible pair of clean underwear, so typically every three weeks.

What was the last movie that you really loved?

I just saw Moonrise Kingdom and got a kick out of the story, the acting, and the style.

If you could re-live one year of your life, which would it be and why?

I want to say I’d go back and tell my 24-year-old self, “DON’T GET MARRIED! YOU’RE A LESBIAN, DUMMY!” Then I’d spend that year in an identity crisis, figure my stuff out a little earlier, and perhaps meet my wife with more time to spare on the ol’ biological clock.

Tour kickoff show =  great night with great people!

What’s your go-to comfort food?

I never met a cookie I didn’t like.

Kombucha — love it or hate it?

I hope I don’t get my hippie folksinger card revoked, but I’ve never even tried it.

Mustard or mayo?

Mustard. However, I feel very strongly that one should be notified of its yellowness or dijonery before being served. I don’t want to be surprised by my mustard.

Artist: Kelly McFarling

Who would be in your dream songwriter round?

Anaïs Mitchell, Patty Griffin, Andre 3000, Tom Petty, Gillian Welch, Carey Ann Hearst.

If you could only listen to one artist’s discography for the rest of your life, whose would you choose?

I could never choose just one, but currently I’m into 97.9, the OG hip hop station in Atlanta, as the soundtrack for all things.

IN NASHVILLE with this delicious deciduous babe. Playing the east room tonight!

How often do you do laundry?

This event reveals itself to me with no consistency.

What was the last movie that you really loved?

I was blown away by 13th, the documentary by Ava DuVernay.

If you could re-live one year of your life, which would it be and why?

I’d love to go back to the time in early childhood that I can’t remember. I want to occupy the brain of my 3- or 4-year-old self and go back to when the world was still being formed on a basic level. People at that age are hilarious, messy, wide open beings. I’m envious of their nap schedules, authenticity, and constant discovery.

What’s your go-to comfort food?

I love to roast a chicken. It’s delicious, it makes the house smell amazing, and it makes me feel like a domestic queen with very little effort.

Kombucha — love it or hate it?

Love it.

Mustard or mayo?

Mayo. Mayo forever.

If you could re-live one year of your life, which would it be and why?

3×3: Rachael Kilgour on Unread Emails, Snow Boots, and Sunrise Lies

Artist: Rachael Kilgour
Hometown: Duluth, MN
Latest Album: Rabbit in the Road
Personal Nicknames: Pretty much none. Although folks often forget my first name, so maybe it’s time to get one.

If your life were a movie, which songs would be on the soundtrack?

Being a solidly confessional songwriter, I suppose my own work would be most fitting. But Janis Ian’s “At Seventeen” and Greg Brown’s “The Poet Game” can certainly make the cut, too.

How many unread emails or texts currently fill your inbox?

An impressively minimal 16 emails. That doesn’t mean I’ve attended to them all — it’s a dangerous thing to open an email without responding immediately.

How many pillows do you sleep with?

Just one.

Big city life.

A post shared by Rachael Kilgour (@rachaelkilgourmusic) on

How many pairs of shoes do you own?

Six, I think. Not including my climate-appropriate snow boots.

Which mountains are your favorite — Smoky, Blue Ridge, Rocky, Appalachian, or Catskill?

I’m more of a lake girl. Seriously, growing up in the Midwest on the edge of Lake Superior, I don’t think I’m willing to declare an educated opinion on this one.

If you were a liquor, what would you be?

Can I be Kombucha instead? I think it contains something like .5 percent alcohol. Good enough.

Hello, Duluth. See you at 7:30pm tonight at Teatro Zuccone (@zeitgeistduluth ) #rabbitintheroad

Fate or free will?

I think the belief in free will is a beautiful, human thing and I think most outcomes are completely out of our hands.

Sweet or sour?

Sweet.

Sunrise or sunset?

Sunrise and the lie I tell myself that I will wake in time to see it.
