BGS Preview: The Long Road Festival in the UK

As this is being written, we’re on our way to the UK to prepare for our FIRST EVER international stage takeover, taking place next weekend at The Long Road Festival, in Leicestershire (near Birmingham). It’s a milestone event for BGS, and part of a larger initiative to reach our dedicated audience outside North America and shed light on some incredible talent that is putting their own spin on folk and roots traditions from other parts of the globe.

To prepare for The Long Road, held Sept. 7-9, we’ve summed up the top stuff we can’t wait to see and do while we’re in town. Hope some of you can join us to check out these highlights too:

1) That lineup tho…
With main stage appearances ranging from Carrie Underwood and Lee Ann Womack to Billy Bragg and Joshua Hedley, TLR is representing a variety of talent from commercial [read: Pop] Country to Americana with a capital A. The lines between roots and country music seem a bit more blurred over here, and we can’t wait to see how it all comes together.

2) Birmingham
Less than an hour from the festival lies the city of Birmingham. What was once a hardened industrialist town is now a breeding ground for creatives and start-ups, fostering one of the youngest populations in Europe (nearly 40 percent of the population is under 25). There’s plenty to discover here — from the old Custard Factory market to four (4!) Michelin-starred restaurants — so it’s a great stopover before or after the festival weekend.

3) AMA-UK stage takeover
Friday kicks off the fest with our friends at Americana Music-UK curating a stage featuring their freshest crop of British Americana talent. (Stay tuned to the BGS site for an announcement highlighting an upcoming collaboration with that team very soon….)

4) Moonshine + whiskey tastings?!
Say no more. You can find us in the Honky Tonk for more than just the BGS stage…

5) Stanford Hall
This is not your mama’s country festival. TLR is held on the grounds of Stanford Hall, a 400-year-old stately home in the heart of Leicestershire, sitting on over 700 acres of expansive parkland. Not too shabby!

6) Born in Bristol film screening
Produced and presented by the Birthplace of Country Music, retracing the 90 years since the recording of the original Bristol Sessions the resounding impact that music has had on the world, the documentary features the likes of Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Eric Church, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Marty Stuart, Sheryl Crow, and Doyle Lawson. Special screenings of the film will take place on site at TLR.

7) The Bluegrass Situation Takeover at the Honky Tonk stage on Sunday, September 9 (DUH!)
Featuring a cavalcade of fierce females from three different continents, our BGS-curated stage highlights everything ranging from bluegrass (Cardboard Fox) to country (Ashley Campbell, Angaleena Presley) to folk (Dori Freeman, Worry Dolls) to Americana (Danni Nicholls, Ruby Boots). It’s gonna be great. You can check out the full day’s schedule below:

13:05-13:45: Danni Nicholls
14:10-14:50: Ashley Campbell
15:15-15:55: Worry Dolls

Ruby Boots Gets Her Glam On

It’s not every day you see someone in the Nashville scene who has ditched the denim and opted for glitz and glam. It’s also not every day you meet someone like Nashville-based, Australian singer/songwriter Bex Chilcott (aka Ruby Boots). In an endless sea of cuffed denim, Bex is sure to catch your eye. (By the way, I love denim.)

Her bold posture and inquisitive gaze, alone, are alluring, but combine those with her embellished vintage duds, and it’s pure gold. Her style swings between edgy glam rock and Western-inspired wear (more rhinestone, less chaps). Either way the pendulum swings, her style is soaked in wonderful vibes reminiscent of the 1970s. Her Instagram is a dreamy feed of stylish second-hand pieces, including unitards, suits, bell bottoms, platform boots, and wide-brimmed hats. From my first Google search, I was digging Bex’s style and vibe, and I was really looking forward to working with her and learning more about what sparked her adventurous style.

Music powerhouses such as Deborah Harry, Stevie Nicks, and Linda Ronstadt are a few of the trailblazers Bex draws inspiration from. Much like these icons, Bex has developed a specific style that speaks of her grit, resilience, and all-around badassery. She also stressed “inspiration, not imitation.”

Style Tip: When pulling inspiration from your style icon, do just that. Never imitate, unless you want to look like you’re playing dress up. Instead, take note of what is working for their personality, why it’s working for them, and build from there. Then, apply that same logic when curating your own wardrobe. Also, nothing is more striking than a person who is confident in their own skin!

I have to admit, following the shoot, I immediately wanted to raid her closet to see what other treasures she had. Honestly, I have never wanted to scout out someone’s closet more. Just the few retro gems I saw her model were embellished with fringe and sequined sleeves, and were cut from shimmery fabrics. Among the footwear were booties with cowhide detailing, thigh-highs (not photographed), and a chunky-heeled glitter boots. Nope, not a single basic item in the collection. Nothing new, overly trendy, ordinary, or cliché. Aren’t you curious about her closet, too? We may need a closet tour.

Bex has successfully curated a stylish wardrobe using only pieces she loves. These pieces currently highlight her preferred personality traits — ferocity and defiance. If you dig Bex’s vintage duds, here are a few of her Nashville faves: High Class Hillbilly, Electric Thread, Gun Street Goods, Goodbye Girls, and 8th Ave Vintage.

Even though this powerhouse babe has a grand collection of lust worthy duds, I believe she could captivate an audience in any old rag.

Take a moment to check out her latest music video for “Don’t Talk About It.”

Your house is burning down and you can grab only one thing — what would you save?
My record collection — I don't own much else anyway,

If you weren't a musician, what would you be?
I would work in a field where I was supporting people without homes and those suffering from mental health issues in a capacity where I could help somehow. I do already do some of that work on the side, so I would put more time into that.

Who is the most surprising artist in current rotation in your iTunes/Spotify?
Only surprising because it has taken me this long to catch on to its beauty is the War On Drugs catalogue. These albums, especially the latest one, are messing me up in a really good way.

What is the one thing you can’t survive without on tour?
Noise-cancelling ear phones so that you can gracefully take the snorers' late-night past-times on the chin.

If you had to get a tattoo of someone's face, who would it be?
Janis Joplin — what a sight for sore eyes.

Who is your favorite superhero?
Captain Planet, for sure — there are a few Australian politicians who could take a leaf out of his book … what a sad state of affairs, when you think it could come down to people running our country over here watching an old cartoon to learn something about this planet we live on!

Vinyl or digital?
Vinyl — hands down.

Dolly or Loretta?
That's not a fair question … There is no way I could choose.

Meat lover's or veggie?
Seeing as though I am heading to Texas soon, I would have to say meat lover's.
