Root 66: Al Scorch’s Roadside Favorites

Touring artists spend so much of their time on the road that they, inevitably, find all the best places to eat, drink, shop, and relax. Want to know where to find the best burger, beer, boots, or bunks? Ask a musician. Better yet, let us ask them for you.

Name: Al Scorch
Hometown: Chicago, IL
Latest Project: Circle Round the Signs

Tacos: Stay away from any "tacqueria" with reclaimed wood counters, Ball jar light fixtures, and single word names. Instead, you wanna look for places named after a specific region in Mexico that are frequented by construction workers and families.

Pizza: Glorious Mother of All Things Delicious and Tasty, we venerate you. Pizza, mystic font from which all other snack-life flows, we raise your name in exaltation to the highest Heavens. I always hit Dante's Inferno for pizza in Chicago, Illinois, when I get home from tour. Hail Satan.

Health Food: Your best bet to actually eat a vegetable on the road is the hot bar at a nice organic grocery store. Of course, there are your national chains, which do the job, but I love finding locally owned health food stores in small towns run by people dedicated to making their town a rad place with thoughtful food options. Real Food Market & Deli in Helena, Montana, is my favorite discovery like that. So good!

Roadside Diner: As suburban sprawl erases roadside towns and Americans find themselves less and less willing to leave the safety zone of multi-national chain dining establishments, the diner is in grave peril. There are still vestiges of hope, though, like the Whistle Stop Diner in tiny Frontenac, Minnesota, about an hour south of Minneapolis on Highway 61, right along the MIssissippi River. Old Town Café in Bellingham, Washington, is also incredible. You look out over Bellingham Bay as you eat, and it's just lovely.

Truck Stop: On the road, the band and I like to pretend we are a dysfunctional, argumentative family and have fake fights about whether we are a "Love's Travel Stop family or a Flying J family." The joke is that all those places are the same except for the regional tchotchkes. I still regret not buying those gator teeth at the Love's in Southern Mississippi on the way to NOLA. Real talk.

Dive Bar: Another dying breed of Americana as our nation's tastes turn toward highly designed bar environments that blend modern minimalism with vintage accents that make you feel like you're actually inside Instagram. The Cinema Bar in Culver City, California, is a true gem, especially considering how close it is to Hollywood and Beverly Hills. It feels like my grandpa's basement and is jam-packed with mementos, artifacts, and wood paneling that have all legitimately been there since the '60s, if not earlier.

House Concert: The Roots Hoot House Concert series in Rhode Island is amazing. Dan and Liz have been throwing these shows at their home for almost 15 years and have cultivated a fantastic community of music lovers and supporters from all walks of life. Music means so much to them and it is immensely revitalizing to play their house and be reminded of the healing power of music and community.

Tour Hobby: Far and away our top tour hobby is thrift store shopping. Not only does it yield sweet threads, new tapes to jam, and useful bric-a-brac, but it allows you to learn a lot about where you are. It's exactly the same as an archeologist digging through ruins and inferring information from artifacts, except we get to do that in real time here in post-industrial Anthropocene America.

Book Store: I love bookstores almost as much as thrift stores and Denver, Colorado, has got some amazing bookstores. There's the Tattered Cover, of course, which is huge and the selection is amazing. But my fave Denver book nook is Kilgore's Books and Comics. A really well-curated used bookshop with a well-read clerk who is happy to help. Their Western U.S. History section is incredible.

Car Game: Charlie taught me an awesome game that we've been playing for years now called "Old, Phone, or Burger?". When you are behind someone who is failing at driving (drifting across lanes, going really slow then really fast, etc) you yell "Old, phone, or burrrrger?!?!" and everyone has to guess why they are driving so terribly. Then, as you pass you get to see! Usually, they are old or on the phone; but man, when they are driving and eating a giant sandwich, that shit is the best.

Radio Station: Hands down 89.3 the Current in Minneapolis. I was going to guitar building school up in Red Wing, Minnesota, back when the Current started and I listened to it early in the morning making breakfast every day. They always played mellow folky music in the morning and it was just so perfect. I have so many fond memories associated with that station.

Driving Album: Karen Dalton, In My Own Time, for sure. Just check it out, if you don't know. Roll on, buddies.

Hello, Dallas

Tacos: Fuel City – Dallas, Texas. This is literally inside a gas station, but it may have the best tacos in the country. The barbacoa is so flavorful and the tortillas are all made fresh. It is definitely worth going out of your way for. Plus each taco is only $1.66! Perfect for post-show eats because they’re open 24 hours.

Record Store: The Attic – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. If you’re a 45 guy like me, the Attic is the place to go. Shelves upon shelves full to the brim with singles and more on the counters. If you happen to be after something they don’t have in the store, they might be able to get it across the street in their warehouse that has an additional 100,000 records in it. Seriously. There are lots of great record stores, though, and honorable mentions go to In Your Ear in Boston, Charlemagne Records in Birmingham, Friends of Sound in Austin, and Logan Hardware in Chicago.

Barbecue: Oklahoma Joe’s (aka Joe’s of Kansas City) – KC, Missouri / Cozy Corner – Memphis, Tennessee. We’ve had a lot of barbecue over the course of many tours, and honestly it’s hard to pick just one, but for overall variety, I have to go with Joe’s. Incredible ribs, burnt ends, and brisket — and the sides aren’t just an afterthought like they are at so many places. Tied with Joe’s, though, is Cozy Corner in Memphis. Probably the best ribs in the world and, amazingly, they have smoked Cornish Game Hen! A Memphis institution that got ravaged by fire last year, they are currently housed across the street, but are moving back to their original space later this Spring.

This is Robert, the pitmaster at Cozy Corner BBQ. He's been here since 4 am to bring us the best BBQ around.

Healthy/Refined Food: The Cheese Shop – Des Moines, Iowa. While not exactly healthy food, the Cheese Shop is definitely a diamond in the rough when it comes to food on the road. Situated literally 30 seconds from I-235 in Des Moines, the Cheese Shop has an incredible selection of charcuterie, pickles, and, of course, cheese. When you’ve had your fill of burgers and tacos, it’s definitely a nice surprise in the vast cornfields of Iowa.

TIki Bar: The Saturn Room – Tulsa, Oklahoma. The proliferation of tiki bars around the country continues unabated and the Saturn Room is one of the best. My piano player, the venerable J.B. Flatt, has become quite the connoisseur and we patronized many tiki bars on this most recent American tour. Saturn Room was probably at the top of the list for service and quality, but runners up include Hidden Harbor in Pittsburgh and Archipelago in DC.

Truck Stop: Tebay Services – M6, Orton, UK. My favorite American truck stop has already been mentioned (see Fuel City, above), but my favorite in the world is Tebay services. It’s off the M6 in Northern England and has a farm-to-table restaurant — you can literally see the farm! — inside of it. Incredible, home-cooked food when you’re expecting another bag of Tyrell’s Potato Chips is a beautiful thing.

Fingers crossed…

Day Off Activity: Gotta Groove Record Plant – Cleveland, Ohio. It just so happens that a friend of mine works there, but if you’re a touring musician, you can reach out to the fine folks at Gotta Groove and they will give you a tour of their record pressing plant! Go ahead and nerd out when you watch how little plastic pellets become your favorite album and annoy the workers while they try to work around your pursuit of the perfect instagram post.

Fried Chicken: Harold’s Chicken – Chicagoland. If you couldn’t already tell what our tour priorities are, you probably know by now. Harold’s Chicken has a soft spot in my heart from the time I lived in Chicago, but it is seriously good. Get yourself a half-dark dinner with hot AND mild sauce and you won’t be sorry. Also, go to a location on the South Side, the ones that are north of the loop don’t cook it the same way.

Tour Hobby: Homemade postcards. Incredibly, the U.S. Postal Service will mail just about anything you put a stamp on, as long as it’s the right size. Get a piece of cardboard from a discarded merch box and draw something on it. Anything. Then stick it in the mail with a stamp and send it to your friends. It definitely passes the time in the van, and you come up with some weird stuff …

Coffee Shop: Groundwork – Hollywood, California. Whenever you tour all the way across the U.S., you inevitably end up in L.A. for a couple days before turning around and heading back east. Most of that time, at least for me, is spent at Groundwork. Bright and sunny, great coffee, good food, nice people … and it’s across the street from Amoeba Records. You get your breakfast, your coffee, and then you go record shopping and you start to feel like a person again.

3×3: Marcus Blacke on Tom Waits, Kurt Vonnegut, and Various European Destinations

Artist: Marcus Blacke
Hometown: Wauchope, Australia
Latest Album: Marcus Blacke
Personal Nicknames: When I was about five, I was at school one day — I played a bit of football (soccer) — and, one particular lunch hour, I had a young stroke of genius. I asked my little friends to call me “Skid Mark” because I thought it was a super-cool idea. I arrived home that afternoon to my mother who broke out in a fit of laughter and explained the situation to me.

If you had to live the life of a character in a song, which song would you choose?
“Tango Till They're Sore” by Tom Waits. Jumping out of a window with confetti in my hair seems like the best way I have ever heard someone to live life.

Where would you most like to live or visit that you haven't yet?
Probably Berlin. Of all of the countries around this area of Europe, I really love the idea of them. I’d also love to be in Norway, Holland, Sweden, Iceland, or the Netherlands. I especially would like to visit Ireland, as well.

What was the last thing that made you really mad?
Lots of things could make me mad. I try not to get mad as much as I can these days. I cried when the war in Libya began and I was really mad when our government proposed CSG gas fracking here in Queensland. I can't really take the world seriously, for the most part. I have to hide away in a refrigerator full of food.

What's the best concert you've ever attended?
I saw the Dirty Three at the Tivoli. I cried, laughed, and smiled throughout the set. It was the best live show I will ever experience.

What was your favorite grade in school?
I didn't really enjoy school. While I think it is important, I just think it could be executed in a better way.

What are you reading right now?
Kurt Vonnegut, Sirens of Titan. It's one of my favorites. I love that there is a riddle about a man locked in a hotel room with all he needs to survive. He gets by eating the dates from the calendar and drinks the water from the springs in the mattress.

Whiskey, water, or wine?
Mostly water these days. I eventually came to the conclusion it's less detrimental.

North or South?
North. This question made me think of the Lord of the Rings, for some reason. So I would be the dwarf saying North.

Pizza or tacos?
Tacos. I like pizza but tacos are just more tacoey … I made up a word.

3×3: Max Jury on Michael Jordan, Joni Mitchell, and a Healthy Respect for Tacos

Artist: Max Jury
Hometown: Des Moines, IA
Latest Album: Max Jury (Out June 3)
Personal Nicknames: MJ. A) Those are my initials B) It helps me pretend I'm Michael Jordan playing for the bulls '96-'97.

If you had to live the life of a character in a song, which song would you choose?
I'd love to live inside the album Hejira by Joni Mitchell. She went on a road trip across America (which she took all by herself) and stayed in random hotels and what not along the way. I'd really like to do something like that — I'm sure I could learn a lot about myself.

Where would you most like to live or visit that you haven't yet?
Japan! I'm really interested in visiting places outside of Western culture and I think Japan would just be so cool. The food, the nightlife, the art … everything. That's definitely on my bucket list.

What was the last thing that made you really mad?
I'm always losing things … even when I make an effort to keep a tab on them — sunglasses, wallets, lighters, clothes — it's very frustrating … but my own fault.

#tbt the matching tour – somewhere in Ireland with Bobby, King of Boys Town

What's the best concert you've ever attended?
I saw the band Low play in a cemetery once, and that was real special albeit in a pretty morbid, dark way. I remember I went with my girlfriend at the time, and we were sitting amongst the headstones. Pretty creepy cool and, in a way, fitting for their music.

What was your favorite grade in school?
Sophomore year of high school … I was able to drive, made some new friends, started thinking about what I wanted out of life … It was a coming of age year for me .

What are you reading right now?
Love Is a Dog from Hell: Charles Bukowski. It's a collection of his poems for the 1970s, I think. I love his voice as a writer and particularly the way he writes about love. It's never sappy or overly sentimental, but can still knock the wind out of me.

Whiskey, water, or wine?
At a different time in my life, I would have asked, "Any chance I could grab a whiskey and a wine?" But now I'm all about water.

North or South?
I'm an Iowa boy, so I'm going to say North. But my best friend lives in Chapel Hill and, whenever I go down and visit I find it pretty impossible to leave for a whole host of reasons — but, mostly, palmetto cheese.

Pizza or tacos?
Pizza. Not a huge taco guy. No disrespect to tacos, though.

Root 66: Nick Drummond’s Roadside Favorites

Touring artists spend so much of their time on the road that they, inevitably, find all the best places to eat, drink, shop, and relax. Want to know where to find the best burger, beer, boots, or bunks? Ask a musician. Better yet, let us ask them for you.

Name: Nick Drummond
Hometown: Seattle, WA
Latest Project: Nick Drummond

Tacos: I’m sure I’m just asking for trouble, but if I see a small taco truck in the middle of nowhere, you can bet your belly I’m gonna stop. So far, it’s worked out okay. I’ve had extra good luck in the Central Valley.
Health food: Skagit Valley Food Co-op. Mt. Vernon, Washington. I’ve done the trip from Seattle to Bellingham more times than I can possibly count, and this co-op sits in the perfect location for a quick adjustment. Bladder relief and quinoa under the same roof? Sign me up.
Sushi: Sushi Hana. Sebastopol, California. I have no idea if this is actually the best I’ve had on the road, but every time I’ve been there, it’s been with good friends who live nearby and it has filled my belly with the type of company one craves while on the road.
Dive Bar: I don’t think it’s fair to call this a dive, but Coop’s Place in New Orleans might be my favorite place on earth for eating and drinking. Just make sure you know how spicy your hot sauce is before you pollinate your po’ boy … I had to order a couple glasses of milk once to quench the burn.

Music Festival: It’s not known as a music festival per se, but Oregon Country Fair is heaven on earth.
Backstage Hang: Again, Oregon Country Fair. Some of the best songwriting I’ve ever heard was played around a campfire here well into the morning.
Listening “Room”: Halibut Cove. Homer, Alaska. We played on a floating stage for an audience on a deck over looking the water in Alaska. It was an incredibly beautiful place. They have to set the showtimes to correspond with high tide, otherwise we’d be something like 20 feet below the crowd.
House Concert: Chicken Barn. Whidbey Island, Washington. They turn a wood shop into a concert venue, and you’d be hard pressed to find a more engaged audience. Really sweet people, too.

Coffee: Haymarket Café. Northampton, Massachusetts. If it wasn’t such a lovely café, I’d want to kick everyone out and make it my home.
Highway Stretch: Highway 20. Washington Pass. I’m a Washington boy, and these views are top notch. I’m usually an advocate of keeping both eyes on the road, but over this pass, all bets are off. They close it in the Winter because it’s just too beautiful.
Driving Album: Paul Simon's Concert in the Park. Masterful, start to finish. That album just gobbles up the miles.
Radio Station: KTRT 97.5 — The Root. Winthrop, Washington. Great community radio is a force for good in the world.

I would be Bobby McGee and hang out with Janis Joplin.

Where would you most like to live or visit that you haven't yet?
I haven't been to Amsterdam yet and I think I would love it.

What was the last thing that made you really mad?
Watching Tiny House Hunters and listening to the potential buyers complain that the house doesn't have enough space. They are buying a TINY house. Painful.

Pearl Jam at the Spectrum. It was the last show held there before it was torn down. Epic.

Second. Mrs. Donlin ruled.

I can't sit still long enough to read anything.

Wall full of whiskey. I'm in trouble.

Both. I love food. All of it.

If you had to live the life of a character in a song, which song would you choose?
C: "Pretty Boy Floyd"
J: "Jack and Diane"

Where would you most like to live or visit that you haven't yet?
C: Iceland
J: With Leonard Cohen circa 1972 in his Greek Isle home

What was the last thing that made you really mad?
C: Ignorant white people.
J: Willfully ignorant white people

What's the best concert you've ever attended?

C: KISS when I was 12. Fucking awesome!
J: Prince on the Dirty Mind tour.

What was your favorite grade in school?
C: I hate school.
J: I like that Catherine still actively hates school. I was also a hater of school and suffered massive bouts of nausea every morning just from the dread of it, but there were moments of peace in the third grade. My third grade classroom was in Central Florida and it had no AC, but it did have a small toilet closet attached to the room. I would go in the toilet closet, lie on the ground, and spoon the cool porcelain bowl. It was like a thunder jacket, for I would sometimes crane my neck in a way where I could read the logo on the back of bowl. Stansbury was printed in blue with a fancy cursive font. This was also the name of my teacher. The connection between the toilet and my teacher offered long moments of imagining my teacher as a toilet mogul.

What are you reading right now?
C: Greil Marcus — Three Songs, Three Singers, Three Nations. Janet gave it to me for Christmas.
J: I am spliting my nights between the latest Jonathan Franzen book, Purity, and a fascinating book by Tamim Ansary named Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World Through Islamic Eyes. It should be required reading.

Whiskey, water, or wine?
C: What time is it?
J: Last night it was whiskey, wine, then water.

North or South?
C: For food or politics?
J: Catherine asks a much needed clarifier.

Pizza or tacos?
C: Tacos
J: That's a tough call. I may have to say pizza only because I think it's more forgiving as far as preparation. I can eat bad pizza and still find enjoyment. A bad taco, not so much so.

A Minute in Los Angeles with Sean Watkins

Welcome to "A Minute In …" — a BGS feature that turns our favorite artists into hometown reporters. In our latest column, Los Angeles' Sean Watkins takes us on a tour of his favorite hikes and hangs.

Howdy, folks! So, for my "Minute In" section I've chosen four places I really love in Los Angeles. Two of them are nature-y and two are food-y.

Point Dume

Point Dume has been a landmark for sailors going up the coast for centuries. It's an ancient volcanic rock formation jutting upward from the south end of Zuma Beach. A huge cliff faces the ocean, but you can walk up around and behind it to get to the top, if you don't want to rock climb it. Once you're up there, you'll find amazing panoramic views. And anytime other than summer, it's usually pretty empty of people. It's also a great place to look for whales. I've seen a few from up there. Also, for Big Lebowski fans, this is where Walter and the Dude emptied Donnie's remains from the coffee can.

The Trails Café

The Trails Café has been one of my favorite spots to hang in L.A. for a long time. It's in Griffith Park and is the perfect place to hang and relax and forget that you're in the middle of a huge, busy city. The coffee is good (Stumptown) and the avocado sandwich is great! I like to go there, camp out at one of the picnic tables, and write or work for a few hours. Lots of big old trees and shade. You also might make yourself a little coyote friend, as they sometimes wander by sniffing around for food.

Griffith Park

Just up the road from the Trails Café, about half-way to the Griffith Observatory, is a little place you can pull off the road. There's a trail that starts there which quickly heads up a pretty steep ridge. It's not an easy trail, and there's not room for more than a few cars to park at the bottom, so there's usually no one there. It's a great place to go watch the sunset and clear your head.

CaCao Mexicatessen

I just moved to the Eagle Rock area and this is my new favorite taco place. There are so many great tacos to be enjoyed in these parts, but this place takes the cake for me. Connected and run by the same people is Vinos Del Valle, which features wines and beers made in the Baja peninsula. Pretty cool spot!

Sean Watkins is a Los Angeles resident and musician. His latest album What to Fear is out March 18.

If you had to live the life of a character in a song, which song would you choose?
As of today, the dogged, determined character singing “ The Road I’m On” ( Mando Saenz) who takes the beating of life and uses it like a chip on his shoulder: “ I’m not sure where it’s taking me now. I’m tired of being told it’s nowhere bound. Nothin’ quite as sweet as the sound of that same old song.”

Where would you most like to live or visit that you haven't yet?
Hawaii (Anyone booking?)

What was the last thing that made you really mad?
Donald Trump’s face

What's the best concert you've ever attended?
Gary Louris solo at the former Nashville dive the Slow Bar competes with Lucinda Williams in Seattle around 2002.

What was your favorite grade in school?
1st grade, because I was madly in love with my teacher, Mrs. Kluge, and I honestly felt like she “got” me.

What are you reading right now?

If you had to live the life of a character in a song, which song would you choose?
The dad in "A Boy Named Sue." I'm kind of living out the narrative of that amazing tune in that I just named my daughter "Casper," so I'm expecting a good beating from her when I get older.

Where would you most like to live or visit that you haven't yet?
So many of my friends seem to rave about Berlin. Unfortunately, I've yet to go. A lot of my heroes live — or have lived — there, at some point or other. Anywhere in which David Hasselhoff's music is that popular must be a strange and truly unique place.

What was the last thing that made you really mad?
Easy: I'm particularly pissed off at cancer. It's taking away so many people I dearly love and admire, all too soon. A massive and hideous boo to cancer.

A photo posted by Henry Wagons (@henrywagons) on

What's the best concert you've ever attended?
I only recently saw the Rolling Stones in Melbourne at a 10,000-seat area — an intimate show for such an iconic bunch of legends. Keith Richards, in particular, fried my mind. Such a delicate touch creating such a mammoth sledge hammer of a sound. Hearing those songs live sent relentless shivers through all limbs … Surely, some of the coolest, hardened, elderly gentlemen that there are.

What was your favorite grade in school?
The final year … where shit was getting heavy. The concepts were finally real. The books I was reading had proper weight. The maths I was crunching was much needed exercise for my mind. The exams were a massive, sweaty stress that I felt had true real life consequences. Who was I to know they would end up pretty meaningless in the scheme of things? I cared about how well I did, at the time, so it was all an epic thrill ride. Yes, I was a nerd. Who knew I'd throw away my education, in a fit of noise and booze, and become a dirtbag musician huh? And … loving every damn minute.

What are you reading right now?
Are You Hungry Tonight?, an old cookbook of Elvis Presley's favourite recipes. I'm looking for a particular peanut butter pie recipe. It's either in that book or Graceland's Table.

A photo posted by Henry Wagons (@henrywagons) on

Whiskey, water, or wine?
Surely most of us songwriters would say all of the above?
If I have to choose, a single malt scotch whiskey with water on the side, please.

North or South?
Wherever the kind lady on Google Maps is telling me to go.

Pizza or tacos?
In general, I feel Australia is yet to nail Mexican food. We are a loooong way from the border, I guess. So, when at home in Australia, I'd go a pizza. But in the U.S., I loosen my belt and pull over at every damn taco truck I pass on the street.
