3×3: Michaela Anne on Bieber, Headphones, and Popeye the Superhero Sailor Man

Artist: Michaela Anne
Hometown: My daddy was a Naval Submarine Officer so we moved every other year, which means I don't know a hometown. We spent a lot of time in a small town called Silverdale, Washington, outside of Seattle, so that's one of the closest things to a hometown for me.
Latest Album: Bright Lights and the Fame
Personal Nicknames: Oh so many … Mickey, Mac, Little Mac, Chaela, Quaela, Macadoodle, Mick … the list goes on. I think people typically think Michaela is a hard name, so people have been shortening or changing it for me my whole life.

STREAM: Stan Simon & the Hotel Bible, ‘Ruins’

Artist: Stan Simon & the Hotel Bible
Hometown: Toronto, Ontario
Album: Ruins
Release Date: May 27

In Their Words: "When I was 12, I remember my father was diagnosed with cancer. I was trying to understand the world around me and get a grasp on my place within it. My father gave me my first guitar a few years prior. It was a classical guitar with no name on the headstock and it had a large body that I could really melt into. Our house had a record player in our basement, and I never spent more time exploring music than when he was sick. It gave me a light, a purpose, and a way to express what I was feeling as I attempted putting the puzzle pieces of mortality together. The records felt like personal friends of mine, comforting me in a dark time and teaching me lessons of creativity. Folk, country, western, blues and rock 'n' roll were the sounds of the night and often what put me to sleep.

There was a night in that basement while playing the classical guitar when the headstock suddenly cracked and fell off onto the floor right in front of the record player. It must have been from old age. I've kept it ever since and have now used it for the front and back cover of my new record, Ruins — a title to represent a relic of those long nights reminding me of my roots and where I was when I first started understanding songwriting and the emotions that go into it, a title to speak to my past and the stories that experience leaves with us, a title that echoes the traditional genres I grew up to admire and soak in, a title I can show to my father while we sit in that basement and take a listen." — Stan Simon

Gig Bag: Elephant Revival

Welcome to Gig Bag, a BGS feature that peeks into the touring essentials of some of our favorite artists. This time around, Elephant Revival's Daniel Rodriguez gives us a look at what the band has to have handy when they're out on the road.

Bowerman Dreadnought Guitar: My friend Jayson Bowerman made me a fabulous guitar that I have been playing on stage and at home. It sounds really incredible.

A nice hat: I never think about how my hair looks, and seldom do I look in a mirror. So a nice hat is an easy problem solver in this case. “Oh, you have bed head at 8 in the evening? Put a hat on.” Come to think of it, that's probably why every singer/songwriter I have ever seen wears a fedora. It may be a little trendy, but it looks nice, is a great problem solver, and you could busk with it if you have to.

A book: There’s a lot of drive time out there on the road, and a good book can help stir the mental forces. It’s a great activity before passing out in your bunk, too.

Some good albums: I always like to BUY new albums before hitting the road, because I know I’ll have the time to listen in and get inspired. There’s a great deal of good music out there, from the past and present, and it feels good to buy records.

Headphones: Not earbuds, but some good over-the-ear headphones. It's a superior way to listen to those albums.

Tantric Sex Now Includes Dueling Solos

Los Angeles, CA — Citing the striking number of similarities, the Kadampa Meditation Center of Hollywood recently classified onstage, dueling guitar solos as an acceptable form of tantric sex.

Essential elements of tantric sex include preparing a space; focusing mentally, physically, and emotionally; building energy; and breathing in and out simultaneously while looking into each other's eyes. “It’s a textbook definition,” says Kadampa Center director and sex guru Smitha Patel. “We’ve all seen and felt the energy when two guys face each other onstage, frenetically sliding their fingers up and down fret boards trading solos in an extended jam.”

Other similarities, Patel notes, include choosing a position that heightens your connection with your partner and, preferably, allows you to maintain eye contact without losing the consciousness of the act.

“When you look at the techniques of dueling solos and tantric sex side-by-side, you’d have to be a completely repressed Westerner not to agree,” Patel adds.

When presented with the parallel nature of these sacred acts capable of elevating participants to a higher spiritual plane, touring acoustic band String Break, slated to play at the center that evening, took notice of the correlation.

“I guess live shows are all about staying focused and grounded in the moment and patiently allowing energy to build within yourself and your connection to the other musician resulting in a climax a few hours later,” says a band member who wished to remain anonymous. “Huh.”

“Most audiences are full of sweaty, long-haired men swaying in close proximity, often shirtless or wearing only vests,” notes Patel. “Freud might have had something to say about the sexual energy of hoards of men staring at two guys rhythmically strumming their instruments and communicating only with their eyes. It is easy to be confident in our classification.”

In addition to running the meditation center, Patel is a contributor to the newest edition of The Art of Sexual Ecstasy which will include a chapter on dueling solos. Look for the book to hit stores this Fall.

The above is a work of satire. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental … although entirely likely.

Go Behind-the-Scenes of Jonny Fritz’s Leathermaking Side Hustle

Jonny Fritz is one of the more singular voices in the Americana community. Formerly Jonny Corndawg, the singer/songwriter is known for his humor, sure, but he can also pen a poignant tune with the best of them. His most recent album, Dad Country, earned him critical acclaim and a broader audience. What Fritz's fans may not know, though, is that he's also a talented leathermaker, adorning bags and guitars with cacti, desert scenes, and, of course, naked yoga.

While on the road in Austin, Texas, Fritz gave BGS photographer Sandra DahDah a glimpse into the renaissance man's mobile workshop, which you can check out below. And don't miss the man himself at the L.A. Bluegrass Situation this weekend, where he'll be performing and making custom leatherworks for fans.
