Gig Bag: The Sadies

Welcome to Gig Bag, a BGS feature that peeks into the touring essentials of some of our favorite artists. This time around, we look at what the Sadies have to have handy when they’re out on the road.

Alt-country veterans the Sadies are no stranger to the road. Formed in the ’90s and getting their start as the backing band for Neko Case, the Toronto band has since become a favorite of fans of all kinds of genres thanks to their unparalleled ability to switch styles and sounds with ease. Last month, the band released a new album, Northern Passages, an 11-song LP that’s been on heavy rotation here at the BGS. Below, the band shares their favorite instruments and items to have out on tour.

1962 Gretsch: A 1962 Gretch that Travis recevied as a gift from his Aunt Beth’s father. R.I.P.

Dallas’s B Bender: It gives our band the option of having the B-string go from major to minor, creating a pedal-steel sounding effect we use quite a bit.

Anne Murray jacket: A jacket Sean breaks out for especially leisurely occasions and must-have for Anne Murray fans.

1985 Martin D-28: Belonging to Travis, it’s a must for stage but also before and after gigs to write or learn songs or just party jams.

If you were in a high school marching band, which instrument would you want to play?

The snare. It’s all about the groove.

Do your socks always match?

YES.

If you could have a superpower, what would you choose?

Healing.

What’s your go-to road food?

Chipotle. At least you know it’s GMO-free, the meats are almost reasonably raised, and you can’t beat that guac for healthy fat!

Who was the best teacher you ever had — and why?

Steve Duesterbeck. Ninth grade history. At least once a day he would say, “War is hell and people die.”

What’s your favorite TV show?

The Waltons

Boots or sneakers?

Sneakers. I used to be cool. Now I’m comfortable.

Which brothers do you prefer — Avett, Wood, Stanley, Comatose, or Louvin?

Louvin.

Canada or Mexico?

Love ’em both. If I had to choose … Mexico. My father-in-law has a ranch in the mountains outside Gaudalajara.

WATCH: The American West, ‘Roadsick Blues’

Artist: The American West
Hometown: Portland, OR
Song: “Roadsick Blues”
Album: The Soot Will Bring Us Back Again
Release Date: March 17, 2017

In Their Words: “We shot this video in between West Coast tours, and the goal was to capture a more realistic portrayal of the touring life of independent musicians. It is a common misconception that touring consists of a lot of all-night parties, groupies, and drug binges. But for many of us, touring is a reflective time, and not so glamorous (though I think this might be a better muse). I wrote ‘Roadsick Blues’ as an homage to all the musicians I’ve played with over the years — some are still chasing the dream, a few have ‘made it,’ and many of them have moved on. But this song is about the balancing act it takes to make music full time.” — Matthew Zeltzer

3×3: Jake Xerxes Fussell on Cheese & Crackers, Gin & Tonic, and Sacred Harp Songwriter Rounds

Artist: Jake Xerxes Fussell
Hometown: Columbus, GA
Latest Album: What in the Natural World
Personal Nicknames: When I first moved to Mississippi, my friend Randy hired me to play a happy hour at his restaurant and he called the local weekly to take out a print ad for the show. I was standing there when he made the call … we were in the alley behind the restaurant and there was a lot of noise coming from the kitchen and Randy had a cigarette hanging out the corner of his mouth while he spoke. It was all very quick … Randy had to get back to work. So later that week when the ad came out it read, “Happy Hour with Jack Fissell.” I’d just moved to town, so that one stuck. What else? Oh yeah, “Sexrex.” That’s my middle name spelled backwards … my older sister discovered that one a long time ago. Last weekend, a stranger on the street in Washington D.C. told me I look like Bob the Builder. Some of my friends were present, so that one’s been hanging around lately.

What song do you wish you had written?

“Ocean Front Property” by George Strait, which probably wasn’t written by George Strait. I also like “Ida Red,” but who even “wrote” that, anyway?

Who would be in your dream songwriter round?

Have you ever been to a songwriter round? In my experience, they’re kind of a disaster. I like songwriters, though! Maybe my dream songwriter round would be a bunch of those 19th-century Sacred Harp composers together, which would probably just wind up looking like a Sacred Harp singing.

If the After-Life exists, what song will be playing when you arrive?

“If You Don’t Know Me by Now” — Simply Red

How often do you do laundry?

Fairly often because I have like three things that I wear over and over again. But there are many shirts, and there always will be.

What was the last movie that you really loved?

I liked Certain Women a lot. I also recently watched a documentary by the folklorist Tom Davenport called Thoughts on Beagling. It’s gorgeous, and I can’t stop thinking about it. Does YouTube count as a “movie”?

If you could re-live one year of your life, which would it be and why?

It’d probably be kind of interesting to re-live that first year.

What’s your go-to comfort food?

CHEESE & CRACKERS FOREVER

Which Whiskey is your favorite — Scotch, Tennessee, Myers, Shivers, or Gentry?

I’m a gin & tonic dude.

Mustard or mayo?

I like both! Seems like they’ve both changed a lot over the years, though, haven’t they?

Gig Bag: Jaime Wyatt

Welcome to Gig Bag, a BGS feature that peeks into the touring essentials of some of our favorite artists. This time around, we look at what Jaime Wyatt has to have handy when she’s out on the road.

Notebook: The road brings me into contact with so many characters and inspiring stories, so when I am a passenger and I have a moment to unwind in the van, I spend a lot of time working out different ideas — lyrical ideas and short stories.

Silver boots: Thank you, Paul Kaufman, for hooking me up with the best pair of boots I have ever owned. My first pair of non-vintage, custom boots and they’re my pride and joy. They make a pair of jeans and t-shirt feel like a Prada suit.

Vitamins: Thanks to my NorCal time, I learned about high-quality vitamins when recovering from traveling and physical exhaustion.

Vintage Western suit: Best score I ever found in Pendleton, Oregon, on tour a couple summers ago. This one started a love affair with vintage Western suits.

My friend Gloria Noto gave me this amazing palo santo oil from her hand-made line, Noto Botanics, and it’s incredibly soothing, when I’m stressed or need to wind down after a gig. Just rub some on your wrists, inhale a few times and kick back.
