8 Artists We’re Stoked to See at Winnipeg Folk Festival

Summer has just officially begun, but we're already well into festival season. One gathering we're especially excited about is the Winnipeg Folk Festival, which takes place just a few weeks from now, July 7 – 10. We'll be on site with "Bluegrass Situation North," which includes performances from the Foggy Hogtown Boys, the Infamous Stringdusters, the Wild Reeds, and Noam Pikelny.

We'll cap off our event on July 8 with an Album Hour All-Star Jam, which will see our fair artists performing the classic Eagles album Hotel California. There's so much more great music taking place during the festival, though, that we'd be remiss if we didn't share more with you. 

Basia Bulat

Winnipeg has some stellar Canadian musicians lined up this year, and Basia Bulat is one of them. The talented Toronto-born songwriter is known for her thoughtful folk tunes and for knowing her way around an autoharp.

Wild Child

It's always a pleasure to catch Wild Child, an Austin act known for raucous live shows that live up to their name. Look for tunes from their 2015 album, Fools, during their Winnipeg set.

Eagle Rock Gospel Singers

Eagle Rock isn't exactly a gospel Mecca, but the Eagle Rock Gospel Singers are a welcome, if surprising, addition to the genre, offering a fresh take on old-time religion.

Son Little

If you haven't seen Son Little live yet, do yourself a favor and add him to the top of your must-see list — his soulful blend of blues, rock, and R&B is not to be missed.

Ryan Adams

Do we really have to explain this one?

Lisa LeBlanc

Canadian singer/songwriter Lisa LeBlanc is, as she describes, a "folk trash" artist, meaning she serves up her folk with a heaping helping of punk rock. Come for the fun genre name; stay for LeBlanc's biting lyrics and mad banjo skills.

Hubby Jenkins

Known for his work with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, Hubby Jenkins is also a stellar solo performer, playing several instruments and breathing new life into old-time music.

Rayland Baxter

Rayland Baxter's 2015 album, Imaginary Man, is still on heavy rotation here at the BGS and, thanks to his beautiful vocals and infectious energy, he also remains one of our favorite artists to catch live.

I listen to all kinds of music, so nothing is really surprising when I scroll through but a couple are Bobby McFerrin's "Circle Songs" and En Vogue.

I have to go with Jared Leto because he is so darn pretty.

If the After-Life exists, what song will be playing when you arrive?
It'll be a mash-up sing-along with all that I love: "People Get Ready" into "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and so on and so on …

Maggie: Unfortunately, not many nice words rhyme with Maggie, so not many nicknames have stuck around.
Tyler: I frequently have friends threaten me with nicknames like T-bone, Big T, Billy T Williams, Old Bill, etc., but they're all quitters and give up after about an hour.

Who is the most surprising artist in current rotation in your iTunes/Spotify?
T: Neil Cicierega's music is the definition of surprising, and it's been in my rotation more than just about anything lately.
M: '68 is currently probably the most surprising, but mostly because it sheds light on my the Chariot days (long live, never forget). Honestly, I listen to more podcasts than music right now though, what with all the driving! My current favorite is Lore.

Who would play you in the Lifetime movie of your life?
T: Paul F. Tompkins, no question.
M: I will forever be crossing my fingers that my lady-crush Emma Stone would play my role, should Wes Anderson ever be interested in directing a biopic.

If the After-Life exists, what song will be playing when you arrive?
M: I really, really hope it's this.
T: Or this.

What brand of toothpaste do you use?
M: Currently, Colgate sample-size packets, because I left my Arm & Hammer at a hotel last week.
T: I use regular-sized Colgate!

What's your beverage of choice?
T: Cold brew coffee!
M: There is a coffee shop in San Marcos, TX, that makes the very best cold brew in the continental United States. It is called Wake the Dead, and you should go to there to fully know our beverage of choice.
T: "Very best" isn't an exaggeration. We've been all over the country and haven't ever found another shop that can beat it. We welcome all challengers, because good coffee should be shared (and because, if there's better coffee somewhere out there, I want to drink it).

What's your favorite TV show?
T: I've watched Parks and Recreation all the way through at least four times.
M: All of my favorite shows are finished! I think my absolute favorite show was Over the Garden Wall. If you want to be whisked away by whimsy, please go watch it!

M: I respect both for their own unique qualities!
T: I love them both. Sorry to cop out!

T: I'll say Ryan Adams just to be contrary!

Rejected Band Names: We had a huge shared Google spreadsheet of proposed band name ideas that I just opened apparently for the first time since June, 2009. It seems we were most strongly considering the Hemoglobes, Milk for Spain, and the Chicago Bulls.

Who is the most surprising artist in current rotation on your iTunes/Spotify?
I grew up listening to a lot of a cappella music, some of which was Christian gospel music. I'm not religious at all, but there are a number of those gospel songs that are still in my rotation. Two gospel groups from the late '90s, Rescue and Acappella, were a critical part of what first turned me on to singing and group vocal arranging. I love re-activating that part of my brain that was mesmerized by the vocals as a 14-year-old.

Who would play you in the Lifetime movie of your life?
You know, now that Ryan Gosling's been dyeing his hair darker — and maybe even if he weren't — I just think it would be really smart to cast him in something like this and kind of defy people's expectations. He'd make it work. Martin Wallström (from Mr. Robot) could play Don even though he has a slight Swedish accent, and Robert Sheehan (from Misfits) could play Harris even though he's Irish. And Halle Berry could play Auyon, no problem. If we can get Ryan on board, I think this is going to be huge.

Who is the most surprising artist in current rotation on your iTunes/Spotify?
We were tossing around the idea of collectively dressing up like Andrew WK for Halloween and opening the show with "Party Hard." We didn't end up doing it, but in the process, I went through a mean Andrew WK binge for a couple days.

Who would play you in the Lifetime movie of your life?
I get compared to a lot of different people. "Hipster Ron Swanson," Mario, Frodo. I think that Elijah Wood would have to play me. He'd just have to grow a shitty mustache. Kelsey would definitely be played by Drew Barrymore. We decided this years ago.

If the After-Life exists, what song will be playing when you arrive?
Hopefully Enya and hopefully not Skrillex.

What's brand of toothpaste do you use?
Winterfresh Crest is desirable but not mandatory. I think Kelsey likes Tom's. I think Tom's tastes like tree bark.

What's your beverage of choice?
Jack and Coke, Redbull Vodkas, Vodka Sodas, or a nice Malbec. We often make Kalimotxos. Never heard of them? It's a blend of cheap red wine and Coke over ice. It's insanely refreshing. We like all the beverages.

What's your favorite TV show?
In no particular order, I think collectively, we all watch Game of Thrones, Fargo, Adventure Time, and Seinfeld.
