Basic Folk – Anthony D’Amato

When I first moved to New York City in 2015 to make my fortune as a singer-songwriter, Anthony D’Amato was already crushing it. Fresh off his New West Records debut The Shipwreck From the Shore, Anthony’s career was taking off in a way many young artists dream of. He was kind enough to meet me for coffee, and Jersey kid to Jersey kid, gave me some invaluable advice on how to turn your dream into your job. I never forgot the generosity of that moment and it was such a joy to bookend that conversation seven years later with an in-depth interview with Anthony here on Basic Folk.

Anthony’s new album, At First There Was Nothing, is his first in six years, and showcases much of what makes him special as an artist — neat wordplay, a visual language of the American West bolstered by his skills as a photographer, and some signature production touches that have been consistent across all of his albums. Don’t worry, I was sure to investigate those. The album was produced by indie folk star Joshua James.

Basic Folk – Cristina Vane

Blues musician Cristina Vane has lived many lives. She grew up in Europe listening to an eclectic mix of emo, pop, and rock. She came to the U.S. to study comparative literature at Princeton before moving to Los Angeles to pursue her songwriting career. Determined to get her music out there on her own terms, Cristina embarked on a life-changing solo tour that took her across the United States. She slept in her tent, took in the majesty of the National Parks, and learned more about American culture than most Americans learn in a lifetime.

Vane’s new album, Make Myself Me Again, is a sonic homecoming that showcases her remarkable talents as a guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist. Ever a student of the blues, Cristina pays homage to her forebears while telling her own stories with vulnerability. Some of the highlights of our conversation include central New Jersey deli memories, tour stories, Cristina’s approach to finding the perfect guitar tone, and a roundabout journey to identity.

BGS 5+5: Matt Koziol

What rituals do you have, either in the studio or before a show?

Rituals before a show are always pretty consistent. I have a glass of bourbon, then find a mirror in a quiet room, look in it, and go, “Hey, have some fun… and don’t screw up.” You can call it some tough love motivation! Then I find the band, and I usually give everyone a hug and say something along the lines of “We ain’t here for a long time, just a good time.” The most important parts to me in any show are a great starting note and a great ending note. Everything in between should be a little unhinged and reckless.

In studio/writing — I have a small ritual. Specifically when it comes to having writers block or needing an idea. I stand between two spaces. So, I’ll stand in the doorway of a room from another. Something about the pulling of two places makes my brain work. I’ve written a good amount of songs that way. If I can’t find the melody or words, I’ll lean in the doorway of a room, and after some time it’ll come to me. I always felt like when my thoughts are left in one space for two long, I need them to move. Standing in the space between two rooms makes me work harder to find the constant while my brain is being pulled.

Which artist has influenced you the most … and how?

Elvis. Always has been. Something about him was fictional — a myth. I was too young to have ever seen him live, but only heard the stories about the weight of his music and his life. I remember the first time I saw a video of him, I just stood there and thought, “That’s it. That’s what I want to do.” Watching him entertain with the guitar was the only thing that made sense in my head. Then add in the collection of rhythm & blues, gospel, and country — I knew what I was going toward. Through the years I went through the genres and really tried to pay attention to all the influences and let them move me. His music brought me to so many levels of appreciating everything from Bruce Springsteen to Pavarotti. He transcends generations with his voice and his songs. It has been the thing that drives me to play music, to be a better musician, and to be an entertainer.

Which elements of nature do you spend the most time with and how do those impact your work?

Mostly I spend my time in the river. I love to fly fish. Am I the best fly fisherman? No. However, at a point it’s not about how many I can catch. It’s about being submersed in the action of it. Everything in nature has a rhythm, and actually wading in the river makes me feel it more. It helps impact my work because it’s one of the few times where I allow my brain to shut off and focus on something other than creating. It gives me space and energy back — along with having fresh air, which usually helps. I will listen to music on the way to the newest place to fish, for inspiration, and then I’ll allow myself to be outside in sounds of the woods and the river. That time away is just as important as the time in the creative space. It has taught me patience that I wouldn’t have given myself otherwise.

Since food and music go so well together, what is your dream pairing of a meal and a musician?

I think music and food/drinks go hand in hand with another. Music sets the tone, and usually food will then take the senses to another level. I think if I had a favorite pairing, I would have to treat it like a three-course meal. I’m Italian, and the appetizer always sets the tone. I would say start with a light wine and an antipasto salad mixed with Tony Bennett. His voice mixed with the flavors of Italian food make sense in my head. It’s nostalgia and tradition to me.

Then we get into the main course — steak. A cowboy cut bone-in steak. This is where I want to hear more Appalachia roots. The SteelDrivers would be a great pairing. The music is smoky and has the feel of grit and the mountains like the steak. Now when it comes to dessert, I’m a fan of sweets; however, my favorite way to end a nice meal is a tall pour of bourbon. Neat, no ice. This is where James Taylor comes in. I want to let my body soak in the meal, and let my mind slip into the lyrics while the bourbon helps me digest and relax. I honestly couldn’t think of a better way to spend a good meal.

If you had to write a mission statement for your career, what would it be?

I feel like it would sound a little something like this: “I make music to feel, to move, and to heal — not only people who hear it, but also myself. So, while I have the chance to do it, I’ll make sure every chord and every note has every last piece of me with it to give. There is no sense and no worth in holding back.”

In Their Words: “This song started with the lick — a slinky little chromatic pattern I’d been messing around with on Dobro. I brought it to Will Kimbrough and we built the song around it. He had just warmed up some rice & beans for lunch when I’d arrived. We got to talking about our mutual love of Ry Cooder and other influences. I told him how I grew up near NYC, in a community that celebrated cultural differences as something special. All of these things ended up in the song, happily! I like that this song brings together a back-porch vibe with some big-city chromatic slide guitar licks. The contrasting combination is kind of like me — playing this traditionally male bluegrass instrument, but doing it as a woman, in Jersey City within view of the Empire State Building.” — Abbie Gardner

BGS 5+5: The Delevantes

Rejected band names: “The band was originally named Who’s Your Daddy. The name came from the Zombies song, ‘Time of the Season.’ The lyric reads: ‘What’s your name? Who’s your daddy?’ but very few people ever got it. In fact I think maybe one person did. And it eventually made a list of top ten bad band names. Eventually Mike and I decided to go with our last name. It was easy and simple (for us) to remember. But it’s hard to count how many times it was misspelled in ads or on marquees. One of our faves was ‘The Deldinkos’! Probably should’ve gone with that.” — Bob

What was the first moment that you knew you wanted to be a musician?

I had played guitar since I was about 4 years old and I enjoyed it. Our family was very musical. But I don’t think I understood its full potential until I was a teenager and got together with friends and played as a group. Even just in casual circles. That’s when I saw what it can do and how it can bring people together. Our music began in friendships and it grew out from there. — Mike

In high school after lunch my friend Matt and I would pull out our acoustic guitars and play some songs in the auditorium. A little Simon & Garfunkel, Jackson Browne, or maybe something from Will the Circle Be Unbroken. As we played some of the football players’ girlfriends came over and sat down to listen. We realized guitars and harmonies, not helmets and shoulder pads, was the way to go for us. — Bob

Which artist has influenced you the most… and how?

There are so many, but I would probably choose Bob Dylan. Lyrics, folk music, rock ‘n’ roll — there are so many layers and I love that. And he just turned 80 and has released what I think as some of his best work! – Bob

Probably the Beatles. The combination of both amazing lyrics and some of the most incredible melodic lines. I don’t think anyone has come close. — Mike

What’s your favorite memory from being on stage?

Being asked the day of the show to back up Levon Helm at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show in Cleveland. Rehearsing for about an hour that day and performing “Rag Mama Rag” and “Atlantic City.” — Mike

There are quite a few but two really stick in my mind: The first, we were playing an outdoor festival in Holland and it started to rain. There was large crowd on the hillside. I think the attendance was around 10,000 people and when it started to drizzle all these different colored umbrellas opened up. It looked like a field blooming. The second is the first time we opened up for John Prine and he asked us to sing on the encore, “Paradise.” Won’t forget that one. — Bob

Since food and music go so well together, what is your dream pairing of a meal and a musician?

Sitting down for a dinner of baked ziti and a beer with Frank Sinatra at Ricco’s in Hoboken, NJ, around 1941, just as his career was taking off. — Bob

Hearing the E Street Band play on the boardwalk in Asbury Park with a slice of NJ pizza. — Mike

What other art forms — literature, film, dance, painting, etc. — inform your music?

I’m a designer, photographer, and illustrator as well as a songwriter. All these different disciplines feed each other. They’re all ways of telling stories and I work in all of them. My favorites are probably looking at other artists’ photographs and watching films. They probably affect me the most and inspire my work. — Bob

Going to art school in NYC opened my eyes to how a particular time and place with different art forms can be combined to create a story. The act of creating art alongside other artists — and being fully immersed in galleries and seeing bands in clubs at a certain time — created a story in my head that I can still see. A film with a soundtrack. That time inspires me to find similar moments in how you can imagine a song or say a painting can take on meaning for other people. Part of it is freeing in a way… you don’t have to control every aspect because they will put their story into your art and make it their own. — Mike

In Their Words: “’Here’s to the music that we make at night till we feel alright.’ I honestly don’t know what would have become of me if I hadn’t fallen in with the bluegrass community at Sunny’s Bar in Red Hook, Brooklyn in 2017. The music and the musicians got me through some very dark times. This is really a love song to that whole scene. This was the first tune I wrote for the record (although it went through about a hundred revisions). In fact, it’s the first thing I had written in a long, long time. Stylistically it was very different from anything I had done before. I integrated some of the prominent features of the old folk and bluegrass music I’d been immersing myself in with my singer-songwriter background and landed on something that felt fresh to me. BGS 5+5: Tony Trischka

Which artist has influenced you the most … and how?

Earl Scruggs. Pretty much a no-brainer for me. He changed my life when I was 14 years old. His playing is at the heart of everything I do. And on a larger scale, indirectly because of him, I have the wonderful family I have, have had a successful career and many friends around the world.

What was the first moment that you knew you wanted to be a musician?

I can’t say there was a moment like that. I first earned money playing music when I was 14, and continued to do so regularly through college. Though I was a Fine Arts major in school, and had very abstractly thought of a career as a museum curator (who was I kidding?).

What’s your favorite memory from being on stage?

In 1988, our band Skyline was invited to tour communist Czechoslovakia. Since my background is Czech on my father’s side, it was a particularly moving experience. While there, we performed in front of 30,000 people at the Porta Festival in Plzeň. We played a nighttime set and every second or third person in the audience was holding a candle, which made for an unbelievable sight. We were called for a second encore, and the emcee asked us to leave our instruments backstage and just walk to the front of the stage. As we were standing there facing this incredible candle-dappled crowd the emcee said, “You’ve given your gift of music to us, now we want to give you a gift.” He proceeded to divide the audience into thirds and had each third, of 10,000 each, sing a separate note of a major chord for us. Especially considering this was when Czechoslovakia was still communist, it was a profound experience.

If you had to write a mission statement for your career, what would it be?

Push boundaries and explore new areas on the 5-string banjo, but honor the history of the instrument. Don’t get bored.

Since food and music go so well together, what is your dream pairing of a meal and a musician?

Can I bring back Aaron Copland? On an emotional level he has had as much influence on me as Earl Scruggs. As for a meal, we’d have to start with a nice cocktail, and I guess it would have to be a Manhattan. Dinner would be hearty beef brisket with all the sides, and finish off with some good ol’ apple and cherry pie. I think that would cover all of the appropriate culinary bases.

In Their Words: “This project began without the intention of making a Civil War album, though I’ve had an interest in the conflict since childhood. ‘Carry Me Over the Sea’ was originally conceived as an instrumental, which I composed on a low-tuned cello banjo. I created the person of Maura Kinnear, a powerful Irish woman who lost her husband in a mine cave-in. After leaving her children in the safe care of relatives, she took a ‘coffin ship’ across the sea to America. Settling in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Maura met the reformed gambler, Cyrus Noble, whom she married and, together, they sent for her children. Cyrus rejected Confederate conscription and ultimately fought for the Union at the Battle of Gettysburg.

“No one but the incredible Maura O’Connell would do to inhabit the character of Maura Kinnear. I first met Maura when she was singing with DeDanaan in the ‘80s. I was bowled over and continue to be to this day. She is joined on most choruses by the equally talented Tracy Bonham.

“A cohesive narrative beckoned, and after a moving visit to a slave graveyard, I adapted the character of John Boston, an enslaved gravedigger in the 1850s. With these three central figures — Maura Kinnear, Cyrus Noble, and John Boston — along with a 1938 reunion of Gettysburg survivors, North and South, I felt I had the elements of a story.

Shall We Hope, a phrase taken from a Phillis Wheatley poem, evolved to be just that, a story of hope. It was not created to mirror the divisions that currently exist in our nation. However, I would wish that the timeliness of a hopeful message would ring true today, and that, in some small way, this album could bring positivity, healing and hope in these troubling times.” — Tony Trischka
