Folk Musician Roscoe Holcomb’s 1972 Concert Found in a Pile of Tape Reels

There’s nothing like finding old music in your library and falling in love with a gem that was there all along. Imagine the elation of discovering a long-neglected set of tape reels from nearly 50 years ago only to realize they contain the only record of a performance given by folk singer, guitarist, and banjo player Roscoe Holcomb. Although it sounds too good to be true, it’s a matter of fact that KBOO Community Radio in Portland, Oregon, unearthed Holcomb’s 1972 performance from a pile of 1/4″ reels in the corner of their archives. Today, his concert at The Old Church in Portland provides a rare and unexpected glimpse of a musician heralded by the likes of Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton.

The music on these tapes, capturing a tour date while on the road with Mike Seeger, is far more spirited than the few other documented Holcomb shows, making this newly found collection a window into what could be considered the rural Kentucky musician’s creative peak. Jalopy Records and Mississippi Records have partnered to bring the seven songs from these reels back into circulation, with The Old Church available for streaming and download, as well as on vinyl.

In Their Words: “I was initially trying to write a retro-soul music song when I started writing ‘Step Up’ in mid-2020. The pandemic was just getting us all firmly in its grips right about that time. I wanted to write a song with a good beat and an uplifting message, along the lines of Sam & Dave or Wilson Pickett. ‘Step Up’ ended up being a cross between Stax Records and Jimi Hendrix. I used my 1959 Fender Stratocaster and a Marshall 50-watt half stack amp on it, and this worked well set against the B3 organ and full horn section. In Their Words: “During a cold winter weekend of recording with the band, I spent a couple nights in the Red River Gorge of Eastern Kentucky, camping out in the snow. Working during the days in the studio, tracking the first three singles from Wolfpen Branch, and spending the evenings writing new material while trying to stay warm. Armed with only my banjo and a small propane heater, I set out to try and write a new song that reflected some of my own life experiences, and also felt like a straight-up-the-middle bluegrass standard.

“Juggling my own day job, along with various music ventures on the road and in the studio, can often feel like a massive struggle to strike a balance between work, creative passions, and valuable time with family. ‘Burning the Midnight Oil’ places a sort of exclamation point on that struggle for me. The message is certainly one that many folks can relate to, feeling overworked and scrambling to make time to show our loved ones how much they mean to us. It felt like such a great fit for this band, especially when we worked out the three-part harmony and hard-driving solo sections. In Their Words: “With a tip of its cap to the great rock duets that gave it life, ‘Made You Mad’ is the phoenix that soars out of love’s fiery demise. A reminder that, even when it is your fault, it’s going to be ok. It’s the kind of brokenhearted love song that might come too late to fix it, but just in time to try again. This is the song that documents the catalyst for the breakup and, as such, the album. It’s also the first song Eva and I worked on together. We had sorted out harmony lines for her, but it was originally written just from my perspective. We were days away from recording before we realized that we needed to divvy up the verses to really tell the story properly. We switched the pronouns and it came to life in a whole new way. What was the first moment that you knew you wanted to be a musician?

It’s hard for me to pinpoint the exact moment. I have been around music in one way or another all my life. I grew up listening to my dad and stepmom sing in studios and my older brother Ian is a drummer and recording engineer. I guess one of the first times I felt like I wanted music to be more than a hobby was when a band that I was in as a teenager played our first show. We had this blues/funk band called Say When and it was me and my brother and our two best friends, Zach and Alex.

We had a show at this place called the Handlebar in Greenville, South Carolina. It’s no longer around but it was popular back then and that night we were playing a Battle of the Bands contest. (This was absolutely a pay-to-play type of scenario but we got to play for a couple of hundred people so we didn’t care.) I was the frontman of this group and I think I realized then that being on stage performing for people was a feeling that I couldn’t get anywhere else. It was a confidence that I didn’t have in my normal day-to-day. I was a pretty shy teen and never quite felt like I could fully express myself unless I was writing or on stage. I could connect with people from a stage in a meaningful way and I fell in love with that feeling. I have been in love with it ever since.

Which artist has influenced you the most…and how?

I think I hear Ray LaMontagne’s influence the most in my music. I have always been a huge fan of all of his work but in particular, I love his album, God Willin’ and the Creek Don’t Rise. That album found me when I was just starting to write music in high school and it really settled in deep. I am pretty sure that I got the CD stuck in my 2003 Kia Sportage and had absolutely no problem with that. Obviously, Ray has so much soul and texture in his voice that it’s immediately recognizable to anyone that hears it. For me though, it’s his words that really sell it. He has a way of writing elegant and poetic verses that somehow still feel grounded and relatable when you hear them. I think that when I started writing music and began searching for my own style, Ray’s music was a giant impact on me back then and still is today.

What’s your favorite memory from being on stage?

My favorite memory on stage has got to be when I sang with Willie Nelson. I remember getting a phone call from my agent in a hotel in Nashville. He asked, “Do you have any interest in opening three shows for Willie Nelson?” I said, “Why are you even asking? Absolutely!” Willie has always been a hero of mine and it was an honor to open a few shows and share my music with his incredible fan base. On the third night, I met Willie and he asked me to come sing the gospel with them at the end of the show. It really was incredible. We sang “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and “I’ll Fly Away.” Sharing the stage with Willie Nelson and his entire band of legendary players gave me a feeling that I don’t think I will ever forget.

What has been the best advice you’ve received in your career so far?

So far the best advice I have been given is to stay patient and stay true to yourself. I do believe that every artist has their own timeline and their own path. I think that with social media it can be hard to keep perspective and very easy to fall into a kind of comparison trap. You usually only get to see the good things that are happening to other artists, and not the years of grinding it can take to get to those good things. That is something I struggle with on a day-to-day basis if I’m being honest. I think that the best thing that anyone can do is to stay patient and focus on making art that honors who you are and what you believe in.

Which elements of nature do you spend the most time with and how do those impact your work?

I’ve spent my whole life in a small town in Upstate South Carolina. Just a few minutes’ drive from the Blue Ridge Mountains. I spend a lot of time wandering trails and birdwatching in the woods here. I have always found that when I feel my most tired and burnt out, the hills, rivers, and lakes of this region always provide the refresher that I need.

The title track of my new album is called “Blue Wall.” Blue Wall is another name for the Blue Ridge Mountains so one could definitely say that growing up so close to that mountain range has had a very big impact on me and my music. I have always wanted to write a song about my home and the beautiful scenery that surrounds it. “Blue Wall” is my first successful attempt at doing that.

In Their Words: “We cut ‘Mercenary Song’ before the pandemic, and I had reached out to Steve and he really dug our arrangement. I had my pal Colin Farrell (of Lunasa, not the actor) add a fiddle tune into the middle parts and then thought it would be cool to add some Tex-Mex vibes on accordion. So we asked Michael Guerra from The Mavericks to add some accordion and he blew the doors off it. Then, Chris Masterson of The Mastersons and The Dukes added bari Tele and it all came together nicely. We also added Josh Day on drums, Byron House on upright bass, and Matt Menefee on banjo, mando and dobro. Finally, Steve added his bouzouki in the mix in a bajo sexto vibe.

“We thought it would be cool to shoot a video in NYC at the Dead Rabbit Irish pub. Sean Muldoon, one of the owners who’s from Belfast, was a great host. I recruited director Jim Wright into the project. We had been threatening to work together for few years now, and Steve was up for it and lives pretty close.
