The Stringdusters were due in Philly for our annual Halloween show (where G. is originally from) and coincidentally he was going to be in town at the same time. We booked some time at Rittenhouse Soundworks which has a very cool old warehouse-looking live room, and tracked a bluegrass version of G. Love’s hit ‘Cold Beverage.’ We did it live (aside from a few background vocals) and had such a blast hanging and making music with G., who is such a seasoned pro. “Andy Falco and I met and jammed at the Grey Horse Tavern a couple years back with Ron Artis during my BeachSide Blues tour. We’ve kept in touch since then and when Andy suggested a collaboration with the Stringdusters I was over the moon. I was thinking either let’s cook something up from scratch or do a bona fide hit down-home style. We decided to rock the Special Sauce hit ‘Cold Beverage’ which has become one heck of a great drinking song over the years. I went down to Philly the day before Halloween as everybody was off before the Stringdusters’ Halloween show at the TLA [Theatre of Living Arts in Philadelphia] so we had some studio time in Germantown (where I went to high school). We circled up and ran the song acoustic until we had a killer arrangement. We cut it live and nailed it in the first couple takes and added a few harmony vocal overdubs. The next night I sat in at the Stringdusters show and we debuted the collaboration to a full house. It was such a pleasure to get to work with these amazing musicians and I look forward to the jams to come.” — G. Love

Blue Ox Music Festival 2019 in Photographs

String bands of all sorts from all across the country descended upon Blue Ox Music Festival and Eau Claire, Wisconsin last week for three days of music in the backwoods — and the rain! BGS partnered with Blue Ox and Jamgrass TV to broadcast nearly 20 sets from the festival’s main stage online for thousands of fans around the world. Blue Ox Music Festival: Six Reasons to Go

As I have attended Blue Ox Music Festival each of the past three years, I have found it’s about both the music and the people who love the music. A lot of folks come from isolated rural areas or spread-out small towns, so spending a weekend with so many like-minded, friendly, and positive music lovers is a refreshing and special feeling. There’s a strong sense of community — that’s what keeps bringing me back.

Blue Ox Music Festival 2019 will be held June 13-15 at Whispering Pines Campground in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Here are six reasons to go.

1. The Mornings
A short stroll through the campground in the morning really shows the best in people. You’re sure to have more than a handful of strangers greet you cheerily or invite you into their campsite for coffee and conversation. Additionally, the festival offers yoga every morning — it’s a great place to wake your body up in the morning, limber up before the long day, and meet new folks.

2. Friends of Friends
Blue Ox is a meeting point for music lovers from all around the Midwest. You’re bound to run into a friend, a friend of a friend, or maybe even a long-lost relative. The festival is a beautiful representation of how music brings people together.

3. Diverse Sounds
The lineup draws from a very diverse variety of genres and styles. There’s truly something for everyone, from Deadheads and alt-country lovers to traditional bluegrassers and funky folks. If you were to walk around the grounds and asking passersby which act they’re most excited about you might hear dozens of different answers. It’s really special to see so many fans of so many different styles all in one place.

4. Emerging Talent
Sure, there will be plenty of names on the bill that you already recognize, but one of the finest features of a music festival is discovery — discovery of new bands and sounds from near and far. Like Armchair Boogie, an eclectic group from Madison, Wisconsin. They offer a totally unique and original cocktail of sounds from rockabilly to funk to bluegrass and beyond. The guys recently began recording their sophomore album, What Does Time Care?, so be on the lookout for some new tunes soon.

The Lil Smokies played the Blue Ox side stage in 2018 and the crowd nearly doubled in size over the course of their set. They combine incredible technique and heaps of talent with extremely well-crafted songwriting. It’s really easy to get hooked on their music.

The Wooks are a string band made up of five absolute shredders who blur the lines between traditional bluegrass, honky-tonk, jam bands, and more. This is their first year at Blue Ox and you won’t want to miss them.

5. The Backwoods Stage
Twelve hours of music every day can make it easy to forget about (or be too worn out for!) the Backwoods Stage. It’s the place where all the beautiful late-night weirdness happens. You might find Billy Strings jamming a few tunes with Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, or Jeff Austin picking a few with The Travelin’ McCourys. There’s no telling what might go down, but it’s sure to be a highlight.

6. The Jams
Blue Ox jams — whether on the main stage, during late-night, around the parking lot or the campground — are unique in that you’ll hear everything from The Rolling Stones to John Hartford, and Andy Statman to Hank Williams over the course of an hour or so. Most Blue Ox folks are totally open-minded, which makes for some very cool and unique jams. It’s an event that really does have a little something for all roots music fans out there.

Blue Ox Festival Stretches Bluegrass Boundaries

The Blue Ox Festival is bringing the good stuff to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, on June 13-15, with headliners like the Infamous Stringdusters, Trampled by Turtles, and Railroad Earth. Nearly all of the bands on the three-day lineup share a strong acoustic music influence. And while more than a few of these bands are stretching the boundaries of bluegrass, they’re also picking up thousands of new fans along the way.

Here are some highlights from this year’s lineup:

THURSDAY: The Infamous Stringdusters (pictured above) are back with Rise Sun, their first album since winning a Grammy. They’ll top off the night on Thursday, taking the stage at 10:30 pm and playing until midnight. Earlier in the night, fans can catch local favorites Horseshoes & Hand Grenades, approaching a decade together after meeting in college in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. The Lil Smokies and The Lowest Pair will also perform on the Main Stage, while Old Salt Union and Grassfed play the Side Stage. After midnight, Black River Revue and Chicken Wire Empire take on the Backwoods Stage.


FRIDAY: Trampled by Turtles, the pride of the upper Midwest music scene, are making their first-ever appearance at Blue Ox this year, just after a set from their friends in Pert Near Sandstone. The exceptional lineup also boasts the Travelin’ McCourys, who will play a set dedicated to Sam Bush (who bowed out of the festival to recover from a recent surgery), along with their own material. The roster also features Fruition, the Del McCoury Band, and Jeff Austin Band, as well as Americana favorites Sarah Shook & the Disarmers and Pokey LaFarge. Check out the Side Stage for sets by the Larry Keel Experience, Cascade Crescendo, Barbaro, and David Huckfelt. Once again, night owls can swoop down to the Backwoods Stage for more music — this time from Horseshoes & Hand Grenades and Jeff Austin Band.


SATURDAY: One of the most entertaining bands on the festival trail, Railroad Earth effortlessly connect fans of quality songwriting, awesome jamming, and exceptional musicianship. They’ll follow Pert Near Sandstone on the main stage – but this is not the day to arrive late. The inspired afternoon lineup features the innovation of Billy Strings, the undeniable power of The Dead South, cool insight from acoustic blues artist Charlie Parr, and the straightforward bluegrass sounds of The Earls of Leicester featuring Jerry Douglas. Grab some lunch and check out Peter Rowan’s Carter Stanley’s Eyes as well as Them Coulee Boys as the festival grounds start to fill up.

The Side Stage offers a compelling roster as well, with sets by the People Brothers Band, The Wooks, Feeding Leroy, and Dusty Heart. After midnight, Armchair Boogie settles into the Backwoods Stage, along with the Blue Ox Superjam.

The Bluegrass Situation, JamGrass TV Team Up for Live-Streaming at Blue Ox Music Festival

The Bluegrass Situation is thrilled to announce a partnership with Blue Ox and JamGrass TV for live-streaming from the main stage at this year’s Blue Ox Music Festival, to be held June 13-15 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. BGS will be on hand throughout the weekend to give followers an exclusive behind the scenes glimpse of the fest’s impressive lineup of regional and national artists in bluegrass, roots, and Americana music.

The Infamous Stringdusters Look to the Light on ‘Rise Sun’

The Infamous Stringdusters’ new album Rise Sun acts as an invocation. Across 13 tracks, the band — consisting of Andy Falco (guitar), Chris Pandolfi (banjo), Andy Hall (Dobro), Jeremy Garrett (fiddle), and Travis Book (double bass) — summon the light, which is all the more astonishing considering they tend to formulate their ideas individually before bringing them to the table. When the band came together to record the follow-up to 2017’s Grammy-winning Laws of Gravity, they found themselves interested in sharing a similar message: about hope, about love, about light.

As Book explains, “I only get to sing so many songs a night; I only get to record so many songs in a lifetime. What do I want those to look like? What am I trying to do here? Do I have the opportunity to raise the vibration? Do I have an obligation? I mean, these are the existential questions that I’m going through and we’re all going through as we’re making this record. That’s why it’s so oriented towards the light. It’s the opposite of Dark Side of the Moon.”

As with past albums, Rise Sun is dazzlingly energetic. But there’s also a sense of time—that strange paradox wherein it speeds up as it runs out—threading the project. It can be heard in Garrett’s swift, almost giddy fiddle on the opening title track, Pandolfi’s pacing banjo on “Truth and Love,” and the band’s shared meter, chiming as a mystical grandfather clock on “Planets.” The Stringdusters recorded the album in order, framing the songs with melodic interludes that bring the whole affair closer to the feel of their energetic live shows. As the band gets older and time ebbs, there’s still much to say — new messages that spread a little light.

BGS: You’re a bluegrass band famous for not coloring within the lines, so to speak. How do you set about stretching those boundaries in ways that make sense to both you and your fans?

Book: Our band can be challenging to listen to because it’s not one-dimensional. You’ve got four guys that sing, and every song sounds a little different, and certainly the way I approach every song is as though it’s its own universe. The people who are into our band, they’re ready to go wherever. If you’re into one singer or one style, you’re not going to get very much of that when you come to our show.

The album’s message revolves around wanting a better world, and so many songs involve some theme of light. Since you all write individually, how did you all cohere around that? Was it all kismet?

That’s what happened. It comes out of the culture of our band. We all live in different places, and this last couple of years has been transitional for all of us—in terms of our personal lives and our professional lives. We’re all firmly entering into the second half of our lives, and growing personally and spiritually, and digging in a little more deeply.

I think, for everybody, when that election went the way that it did, it tilted the axis of everyone’s awareness. When we would get together, we’d get into talking about real shit. It came as no surprise to me that when we all showed up with these song ideas, there were these themes emerging. We’re like a family oriented towards positivity and good attitudes and making everyone’s lives better, so when we go home, that pattern continues.

The band is no stranger to political fare, as with “This Ol’ Building.” And it’s not that any one track on Rise Sun feels overtly political, but what’s the band’s response to those listeners who want artists to keep art and politics separate? That seems nearly impossible nowadays.

Every act is political, I think. Why would an artist’s life be any different? Certainly, an artist has an opportunity—essentially a responsibility—to give voice to the larger questions, the larger existential crises of the culture.

Artists certainly can broadcast messages of humanity, of commonality at a time of particular divisiveness.

I can’t speak for the other guys, but when I was younger I thought it was really trite when I’d see an artist accept an award and they’d give it all up to God. I was like, “No, that’s you.” But as my awareness expands, and my gratitude for being alive increases, it seems there is a concept that I can much more closely identify with, where the idea that songs and concepts, so many of them, are already in existence. “Rise Sun,” for example, is a perfect example. I didn’t write that melody. I brought it into form, but that melody is almost timeless—it’s like gospel music. It’s not like I’m standing here, like, “God gave me that song,” but I brought it into form.

That’s the way I see the artist’s role. There is some responsibility and ownership over bringing this stuff into form, but these are concepts and ideas that everybody’s thinking about. Not everybody necessarily has the same angle on it, or the same opinion—not everybody is oriented towards the light—but these larger philosophical ideas, it’s all part of the collective consciousness. So for an artist, of course it’s political; if you’re doing anything and it has any intention or meaning, it’s political.

You all worked with Billy Hume again. What did that feel like, to return to the studio with him?

This one, we did in Denver. We recorded another record with him years ago, Silver Sky. It’s almost like Rise Sun is the third record in that.

Like a trilogy.

Yeah almost. Silver Sky is a really great record—it’s got that Billy Hume sound. He was more of a producer on that. He was more of an engineer on the last two records. Billy is incredibly skilled, and he has a great ear, and his work ethic is insane. He’ll work 16 hour days and never complain. The tone is great and it’s sort of a no-brainer—I’d assume we’d make another record with him.

Andy Falco said you guys don’t use click tracks and you don’t layer a lot during the production process. Do you record live to track?

Yeah, it’s great. These days, we get everything by the second or third take. A big part of it is preparation. We spend a lot of time figuring out how things are going to go before we go into the studio so we can reduce stress. Some bands go in and do all their figuring out in the studio. We have five people intimately entwined in the music, so like to check out everything, and see how it feels to play a song in this key, or tweak the arrangements. For us, sometimes it had a tendency to suck the life out of things, but recently it feels much more like we’re able to get things down, and then go into the studio and not be worrying, but just be deep in it and free-flowing and capture the best performance.

You chose the songs in order before you recorded them. How did that shift the recording process?

It was genius. What it meant was it took us a little bit of time to pick up speed. The opening track “Rise Sun” maybe would’ve been better if we tracked it the third day, but what it does mean is that the record has a very linear feel. We put a bunch of segues in there. It’s sort of like the live show, where a bunch of songs flow into other songs with musical interludes. I’m inside the record, but every time I get through the record and get to “Truth and Love” I start crying. It feels like I watched a Star Wars movie.

Well, talk about a heavy track. That one asks some real hard-hitting existential questions.

I get to the end and I’m overwhelmed by it.

“Planets” is such a standout, too, and I know your wife Sarah Siskind co-wrote that. The interlude that comes in around the 5:30 mark is so striking. Can you explain that moment?

We knew it was a good sonic opportunity, letting it all space out. That was a live take, that was us jamming, and then we overdubbed a little bit of piano.

You were talking about the collective unconscious earlier, but I think you all tapped into something cosmic there.

That wouldn’t surprise me, either—functioning on the astral plane. There’s a lot going on in the world that we don’t understand, or that we can’t quite quantify or make sense of, and it’s all very interesting. The way that things unfold and even just the making of a record is such an interesting combination of all kinds of random circumstances that leads to it. It’s all remarkable and amazing, and we’re all feeling really grateful to be putting this record out right now.

He brought his guitar and had this little idea he wanted to write about, so we threw on some dinner and started a fire in the outdoor pit. We were both wanting to write about a state of mind we had been experiencing a lot and decided that it was ok to be feeling it. That feeling centered on being somewhere in between where we have come from and where we are going, but not being there yet. Sometimes it’s ok to be in that state of mind and we shouldn’t always be feeling pressure to have it all together all the time.
